UAE Beach Closures and Clean-Up: Latest Developments After Authorities Link Unusual Odours to Oil Tanker Spill.

Dubai: The UAE has launched an extensive marine clean-up operation and temporarily closed several beaches following reports of unusual odours that puzzled residents across multiple emirates for several days.

Beaches in Umm Al Quwain, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah have been affected by precautionary closures after the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) confirmed on Friday that an oil spill from a tanker was responsible for the mysterious smell.

According to the ministry, the country’s environmental monitoring and technical assessment systems detected marine contamination caused by the spill. The pollution reached coastal areas in Umm Al Quwain, producing noticeable odours in Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain.

However, officials reassured the public that the reported smells did not pose any health risks.

How Did the Situation Develop?

The incident first came to public attention on Monday, October 19, when residents in Sharjah and other parts of the UAE began reporting unfamiliar and unpleasant odours.

The complaints prompted federal and local authorities to initiate environmental monitoring and investigations to determine the source.

On Tuesday, Lieutenant General Abdullah Mubarak bin Amer, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police, addressed the situation during an appearance on the Direct Line programme broadcast by Sharjah TV and Radio.

He assured residents that conditions remained safe and stable, with no evidence suggesting a danger to public health or safety.

The police chief also explained that the unusual smells reported the previous day had disappeared, although inspection teams continued their work as a precautionary measure.

He clarified that similar complaints had emerged beyond Sharjah and indicated that federal authorities were expected to release additional information.

On October 21, MOCCAE announced that it was working closely with relevant local agencies to investigate the reported odours.

The ministry stated that initial assessments had identified no immediate cause for concern, while field inspections and environmental monitoring continued.

The source of the smell was eventually confirmed during the early hours of Friday, October 23, when MOCCAE announced through its official social media channels that a tanker-related oil spill had caused the marine pollution.

However, UAE authorities have not publicly identified the tanker involved, and the ministry has yet to confirm the circumstances that caused the oil leak.

UAE Authorities Temporarily Close Several Beaches

Following confirmation of the marine pollution, authorities introduced precautionary restrictions at affected coastal locations to protect residents and the marine environment.

In Umm Al Quwain, officials ordered the temporary closure of all beaches and coastal areas until specialist technical teams complete their environmental assessments.

The restrictions will remain subject to the findings of these inspections and the implementation of appropriate safety and environmental protection measures.

Later on Friday, the Sharjah Government Media Bureau announced that Al Hamriyah Beach would also be temporarily closed as a preventive measure.

The decision was intended to reduce the risk of contamination from the tanker spill affecting the beach and surrounding coastal waters.

Sharjah authorities confirmed that specialised response teams were carrying out the necessary preventive measures to safeguard the emirate’s beaches and minimise potential environmental damage.

On Saturday, October 24, the Ras Al Khaimah Public Services Department, working alongside the Ras Al Khaimah Police General Headquarters, announced the immediate temporary closure of all public beaches throughout the emirate.

The precautionary decision, communicated through official social media platforms, was introduced to protect public safety amid concerns over marine pollution.

Authorities advised residents and tourists to avoid beaches and coastal locations until further notice.

Officials have not yet confirmed when beaches in Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah will reopen.

Ras Al Khaimah authorities stated that additional updates would be issued once conditions have been reassessed and it is considered safe to lift the restrictions.

Extensive Marine Clean-Up Operations Under Way

Specialised environmental response teams began containment and clean-up operations shortly after the marine pollution was identified, according to the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment.

Working in coordination with federal and local government agencies, the teams have been implementing measures to control the oil spill, isolate contaminated coastal areas and begin environmental restoration efforts.

Officials are also conducting detailed marine surveys and environmental assessments to establish the scale of the contamination and evaluate its potential effects on surrounding ecosystems.

On October 23, the Umm Al Quwain Municipality Department confirmed that its field inspection teams were closely monitoring affected coastal locations to minimise the risk of pollution spreading to neighbouring areas.

As part of the precautionary measures, fishermen operating in affected waters around Umm Al Quwain have temporarily suspended fishing activities in accordance with official instructions.

Fishing operations are expected to remain restricted in the affected areas until the necessary containment and clean-up procedures have been completed and authorities permit activities to resume.

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has urged fishermen, boat operators and other individuals using the sea to strictly follow safety guidelines and directions issued by the relevant authorities.

Officials have also encouraged the public to obtain information exclusively from verified government sources and avoid circulating unconfirmed reports or misleading claims about the incident.

Residents and visitors are advised to stay clear of beaches and coastal areas subject to temporary closures until official announcements confirm that access can safely resume.
