Dubai: More than 70 Gulf News distributors participated in a traffic safety awareness programme organised by the Traffic Awareness Department of Dubai Police on July 27, highlighting the importance of safe riding practices and adherence to traffic regulations.

Held at the Gulf News premises, the session was conducted by an officer from the Traffic Awareness Department and focused on providing distributors, also known as GN news boys, with practical guidance to help them remain safe while carrying out their daily duties on the roads.

Building a culture of road safety

The Traffic Awareness Department at Dubai Police plays an active role in promoting road safety awareness across the community through public campaigns, educational sessions, and field visits aimed at motorists and drivers of various vehicle categories.

The department has given particular attention to delivery riders and motorcycle users, recognising that they spend extended periods on the roads and face greater exposure to potential traffic hazards.

Through specialised awareness sessions, Dubai Police seeks to strengthen knowledge of traffic laws, promote responsible road behaviour, and help reduce traffic-related incidents.

In addition to awareness lectures, the department has conducted interactive workshops and community initiatives in partnership with both public and private sector organisations to further enhance road safety awareness.

Practical guidance for everyday riding

During the session, participants received practical advice on the importance of following traffic regulations, wearing proper safety equipment, staying alert while riding, and adopting defensive riding techniques to enhance road safety.

The programme also highlighted the shared responsibility of all road users in creating safer roads across Dubai.

By addressing common road situations faced by distributors, the session encouraged participants to prioritise safety while carrying out newspaper deliveries throughout the city.

‘Summer Without Accidents’ campaign

In a related initiative, Dubai Police recently launched the “Summer Without Accidents 2026” campaign in partnership with ENOC AutoPro, aimed at promoting road safety during the summer months.

The campaign is being conducted under the patronage of the Ministry of Interior and the Federal Traffic Council as part of wider efforts to enhance road safety, reduce traffic-related fatalities, and promote awareness among all road users.

Led by the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, the initiative highlights that drivers, passengers, and all road users share a collective responsibility to protect lives and property by following traffic regulations and adopting safe road practices.

‘Aman Roads’ platform

In addition, Dubai Police’s “Aman Roads” smart platform supports road safety efforts by offering practical safety advice, real-life awareness videos, and detailed accident data and reports. The platform enables residents to report reckless driving directly to Dubai Police, encouraging greater community participation in creating safer roads.

Available in 155 languages, including Arabic and English, the platform is designed to serve all members of society, including motorists, pedestrians, and students. Aman Roads also allows businesses to work with Dubai Police on employee road safety training, while smart data analysis helps identify high-risk locations and supports initiatives to reduce accidents in line with Dubai’s long-term road safety objectives.

The platform is accessible through Amanroads.gov.ae.

Partnership for safer roads

Several GN news boys said the session provided valuable reminders and practical guidance that they can apply in their daily routines, helping them ride more safely and with greater confidence.

“We learned about different speed limits, safety measures, precautions, the importance of checking our bikes for faults before riding, maintaining a safe distance, staying calm while driving, and many other useful tips,” said Gabriel Raj.

Sundar Rao Rentapally also expressed his appreciation to Gulf News for organising the awareness session.

“Although I have been riding a motorcycle for many years, I learned several new things. The instructor was excellent and explained everything in a simple, enjoyable, and easy-to-understand way. We enjoyed the class, learned new traffic rules, and I feel more confident while carrying out my duties,” Rentapally said.

Perumal Murugesh described the programme as “highly informative and useful,” saying it helped participants gain a better understanding of road rules and safety requirements.

“We learned about motorcycle lanes on different roads, as well as various traffic violations and the fines associated with them,” Murugesh said.

Meanwhile, Mehar Ali highlighted that the session provided him with deeper knowledge of traffic laws, road signs, and safety practices.

“We learned about traffic penalties, black points, emergency procedures, riders’ responsibilities on highways, how to identify potential hazards early, and defensive riding techniques,” Ali said.

The awareness programme reflects the shared commitment of Dubai Police and Gulf News to promoting road safety through education, awareness, and collaboration.

Initiatives of this kind play a vital role in helping riders gain a stronger understanding of traffic regulations, improve compliance, and adopt safer riding practices.

They also contribute to Dubai’s wider efforts to reduce road accidents and protect all road users through continuous safety awareness campaigns.
