The defence lawyer said his client did not mean to insult or swear at anyone.
An Arab man appeared at the Abu Dhabi Court of Appeal to challenge a Dh7,000 fine imposed on him by the lower court for allegedly swearing at a woman on social media.
The court records show that the defendant, along with some family members, had insulted the plaintiff with abusive comments on social media.
The lower court found the man guilty and ordered him to pay a fine of Dh7,000.
Dissatisfied with the ruling, the man took the case to the higher court where he denied the charges.
“My comments weren’t directed towards her (the complainant). I was talking about someone else,” he said, requesting the court to acquit him of the charge which he called “baseless and unsupported”.
The defence lawyer said his client “is not active on social media”. What he wrote was on a public site, he added. “He did not mean to insult or swear at anyone.”
The court ordered adjournment of the case to January 7, 2020, to issue its ruling. It also ordered the extension of the bail given to the defendant by the lower court.
