From immersive IMAX to Dolby sound and 4DX motion, here’s how to select the ideal cinema experience for every film.
Dubai: When Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey arrived, filmed entirely in IMAX 70mm — a format not currently available in the UAE — one question was on everyone’s mind: where can audiences experience it the way it was intended?
For most cinema trips, the choice is usually driven by convenience: which mall is nearby, which showtime fits the schedule, or which seats are still available for a Friday night screening. And that makes sense.
The UAE has become one of the world’s most cinema-format-conscious markets, with the difference between a standard screen and a premium setup now significant enough to transform the way a film is experienced. A slow-paced drama in a 4DX auditorium may not justify the extra cost, while a major blockbuster on a small screen with underpowered sound can take away from the experience.
So here is the practical guide: what each cinema format offers, where to find it, and which types of films benefit most from each experience.
IMAX: when scale matters most
IMAX is built around size, brightness, contrast and immersion. The screens are larger and curved, dual projectors deliver enhanced image clarity, and the sound system is specifically calibrated for each auditorium rather than simply added as an upgrade. When a filmmaker uses IMAX cameras, this is the format that best captures their intended vision.
Dubai’s flagship IMAX experience is located at Mall of the Emirates. VOX Cinemas upgraded the auditorium in April 2025 with a 4K laser projection system and a redesigned layout. Measuring approximately 26 metres wide, it is the largest confirmed IMAX screen in Dubai. The auditorium also features seven premium pods within the IMAX hall, created by Ōma Cinema in collaboration with French architect Pierre Chican. Each pod accommodates up to five guests and includes reclining seats, blankets and waiter service for a more luxurious viewing experience.
Other IMAX locations: VOX Cinemas at Dubai Festival City has upgraded its IMAX auditorium to 4K laser projection, while City Centre Deira offers IMAX Sapphire, a format focused more on premium seating comfort than enhanced projection. It is worth noting that “Sapphire” refers to the seating experience rather than the image technology itself. In Abu Dhabi, VOX reopened an upgraded IMAX with Laser auditorium at Yas Mall in late 2025, while Sharjah’s IMAX experience is available at Zero 6 Mall.

ScreenX: the format that expands beyond the screen
ScreenX is one of the easiest cinema formats to recognise. Instead of keeping the image confined to the main display, it extends visuals onto the side walls, creating an immersive 270-degree viewing experience. In Dubai, the format is exclusively available at Reel Cinemas in The Dubai Mall.
However, the experience varies throughout a film. Only selected scenes are filmed or adapted for the side panels, meaning the expanded visuals appear only at certain moments. Action sequences, aerial shots, car chases and large-scale crowd scenes benefit most from the wider view, while dialogue-driven scenes typically return to the central screen, making the difference more noticeable.
Best suited for: Action films, adventure movies, thrillers and visually expansive blockbusters.
Sit in the centre for the best experience. Move too far to either side, and the peripheral panels stop feeling immersive and can become more of a distraction than an enhancement.

Dolby Cinema: for those who value sound and picture quality
If you have ever left a cinema feeling like dialogue was unclear or key details were lost in the mix, Dolby Cinema is designed to solve exactly that. The format combines Dolby Vision for enhanced brightness, contrast and colour accuracy with Dolby Atmos for immersive, multidimensional sound, delivering a noticeable improvement in both audio clarity and overall picture quality.
The difference is especially clear in dark scenes. Dolby Cinema’s deeper blacks make nighttime sequences appear genuinely dark rather than washed-out grey, which can significantly improve the experience for horror films, thrillers and visually atmospheric movies.
Reel Cinemas operates Dolby Cinema screens across the UAE, including locations at The Dubai Mall, Dubai Marina Mall and Al Ghurair Centre. The Dolby Cinema complex at The Dubai Mall made history as the first in the world to feature two Dolby Cinema auditoriums.
Best suited for: Horror, thrillers, music-focused films and movies with powerful soundtracks

4DX and MX4D: entertaining, but choose the right movie
Moving seats, wind effects, water sprays and even scents — 4DX turns a cinema screening into a more interactive experience. The format is exclusive to VOX in the region, combining motion-enabled seats with environmental effects such as wind, lighting and water effects that are synchronised with the action on screen. VOX operates Dubai’s only two certified 4DX auditoriums, located at Mall of the Emirates and Dubai Festival City. Reel Cinemas offers a similar experience through MX4D at The Dubai Mall.
Be realistic about what you are booking. 4DX is essentially a theme park ride with a storyline attached. Superhero movies, creature features and films packed with chase sequences are where it delivers the most fun. A three-hour prestige drama, however, may leave you feeling more unsettled than entertained — and with less money in your wallet.
It is also worth remembering: the experience is loud, the seats are constantly moving, and anyone bringing popcorn should expect to lose some along the way.

Xtreme: the region’s largest cinema screen
Not every premium cinema experience comes with an IMAX label. Roxy Xtreme at Dubai Hills Mall features the largest cinema screen in the Middle East, measuring roughly the size of two tennis courts. The auditorium includes Director’s Boxes that seat up to 12 guests, complete with personalised waiter service.
The experience combines laser projection with Dolby Atmos sound and is part of a 15-screen cinema complex that also offers Platinum and Silver seating options.
It is important to note that the screen is not IMAX-certified, which may matter to viewers who prioritise official IMAX specifications. However, for those seeking sheer size and scale, the distinction may be less significant.

When comfort matters more than technology
Sometimes the cinema experience is about more than the screen itself — and that is perfectly fine.
Luxury cinema options across the UAE include THEATRE Pods by VOX, Reel Platinum Suites, Novo 7-Star and Roxy’s Platinum experience. These formats focus on premium comfort, offering reclining seats, in-seat dining and personalised service. Reel Platinum Suites at The Dubai Mall also provide added touches such as blankets and pillows for a more relaxed viewing experience.
Two practical points to keep in mind: Children under five are not allowed inside THEATRE, while guests aged five to 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. It is also worth noting that these luxury auditoriums typically use standard cinema technology, meaning the premium price is primarily for the comfort and service rather than upgraded picture quality.
The other end of the spectrum
For those seeking a more alternative cinema experience, Cinema Akil at Alserkal Avenue offers an independent film-focused option. CinemaCity at Dubai Fountain Views and Roxy at City Walk provide more intimate settings that are well suited to relaxed evenings and date nights.
There is also the seasonal outdoor option. Roxy’s open-air cinema at Galleria Mall Al Barsha offers reclining seats, bean bags, laser projection and Dolby Atmos sound, typically operating between October and April when temperatures are more comfortable. It may not be the ideal choice for a subtitle-heavy film, but it is a great setting for revisiting a favourite movie.
Ticket prices vary depending on the film, day and showtime, so it is worth checking the app before booking. Weekend evening screenings during a film’s opening week are usually among the most expensive options.
A simple way to choose
Focus on what the film is designed to deliver rather than just the genre.
If the film relies on scale and visuals, choose IMAX. If sound design is central, Dolby is the better choice. If the appeal is spectacle, movement and immersion, ScreenX or 4DX can add something extra. For dialogue-driven films and character-focused stories, a quality standard auditorium with good sound can be more than enough — leaving room in the budget for dinner instead.
One final tip worth remembering: choose seats in the middle rows whenever possible. Central seats provide the most balanced sound mix and the viewing angle the filmmakers intended, while the first two rows are best avoided in almost any format. Even the most advanced projection technology cannot compensate for a poor seat.
