19-year-old Emirati climber conquers Kyrgyzstan’s Lenin Peak in record-breaking achievement.
Abu Dhabi: Emirati mountaineer Fatima Abdulrahman Al Awadhi, 19, has made history for the UAE by becoming the youngest Arab to reach an altitude above 7,000 metres and the first Emirati to successfully summit Lenin Peak, standing at 7,134 metres, in Kyrgyzstan’s Pamir Mountains on 18 July 2026.
The achievement marks Fatima’s highest-altitude ascent to date and represents a major step towards her ambitions of completing the Seven Summits and the Explorer’s Grand Slam. The milestone further cements her reputation as one of the region’s most promising young mountaineers.
Standing among Central Asia’s most challenging high-altitude peaks, Lenin Peak is known for its unpredictable weather conditions, heavily glaciated routes, and the physical demands of prolonged exposure above 7,000 metres.
Reaching the summit represents Fatima’s highest climb to date, coming just a year after she completed her first major mountaineering challenge — Mount Elbrus, which rises 5,642 metres and is recognised as Europe’s highest peak.
The three-week expedition was completed in two stages: an acclimatisation phase involving climbs higher up the mountain, followed by the final summit attempt. During the ascent, Fatima successfully reached elevations above 7,000 metres without the use of supplementary oxygen.
The milestone adds to an already remarkable mountaineering record. Fatima is the youngest Emirati to summit Mount Elbrus and the youngest Arab to successfully climb both Vinson Massif in Antarctica and Carstensz Pyramid in Oceania. She has also conquered Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, further strengthening her achievements on the global climbing stage.
Upon reaching the summit of Lenin Peak, Fatima raised the UAE flag, marking the first time the nation’s flag has been carried to the top of the mountain.
She also displayed a message for young people around the world from President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, highlighting the values of ambition, hope, resilience, and determination.
Fatima dedicated the achievement to President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, expressing appreciation for his support and encouragement of the UAE’s youth.
Fatima also dedicated the achievement to H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak (Mother of the Nation), Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, expressing her appreciation for the leadership’s continued support in empowering Emirati women to pursue excellence and achieve new milestones.
Reflecting on the achievement, Al Awadhi said: “Standing on the summit of Lenin Peak with the UAE flag was not just the completion of a climb; it was a reminder of the purpose that began this journey. Mountaineering has taught me that the greatest achievements come from embracing challenges and pushing beyond limits.
“I am deeply grateful to have undertaken this climb under the patronage of our father, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. His support reflects a commitment to empowering young people to pursue their ambitions and dream bigger. Fatima is a recipient of the Presidential Court University Scholarship and the Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Scholarship for Outstanding High School Students. She continues to balance full-time university studies with elite mountaineering, demonstrating how academic achievement and sporting ambition can successfully come together.
With four of the Seven Summits already completed and a successful ascent above 7,000 metres without supplementary oxygen, Fatima remains firmly on course to achieve her ambition of conquering all seven highest peaks before turning 20, while continuing her pursuit of the Explorer’s Grand Slam.
