Passengers of a KLM flight had to spend 11 hours in the air only to land from where they took-off due to volcanic eruption and cargo of horses.
KLM flight KL685, from Amsterdam to Mexico, was about five-and-a-half hours into the flight when it was forced to turn around. The plane had already crossed the Atlantic and was over Canada when it had to turn around due to volcanic eruption from Popocatepetl, an active volcano near Mexico City.
Moreover, the plane could land at an alternative airport as it had a large cargo of horses onboard and hence had to return to the airport it originated from, The Independent reported. The diversion meant that passengers had spent over 11 hours onboard just to return to where they had started their journey from.
A KLM spokesperson said, “Due to a volcanic eruption in Mexico, the flight KL685 Amsterdam-Mexico returned to Schiphol on Thursday, November 28.
Landing at another airport was not possible, because of the visa requirements of passengers and as there was a large cargo of horses onboard.”
