Emirates introduces initiative to help UAE students transform retired aircraft into innovative new products.

Emirates welcomes 23 UAE university students to its Engineering workshops for a six-week learning programme.

Dubai: Emirates Engineering, the airline’s aircraft maintenance division, has launched a new programme that allows UAE university students to transform retired aircraft materials into innovative products while gaining hands-on experience alongside aviation professionals.

Named Material Futures Studio, the six-week initiative is led by Emirates Engineering’s Upcycling department. The programme encourages students to explore new possibilities for repurposing retired aircraft materials while nurturing the next generation of aviation innovators and talent.

The inaugural edition brings together 23 students from Khalifa University, Emirates Aviation University, and the University of Sharjah.

The programme opened with an orientation session and a tour of Emirates Engineering’s Dubai facilities, giving students the opportunity to meet senior leaders and gain first-hand exposure to aircraft maintenance operations.

They also toured the airline’s upcycling workshop, where they explored how materials recovered from retired aircraft are being repurposed into innovative new products.

How does it work?
Over the course of six weeks, students will apply their knowledge to create concepts focused on upcycling and repurposing retired aircraft materials. Emirates Engineering specialists will guide and mentor them throughout the ideation and concept development process.

The programme will conclude with a showcase event, where students will present their ideas and prototypes developed using upcycled aircraft materials.

Emirates said the programme is designed to strengthen the connection between academia and industry by providing students with practical engineering experience and deeper insight into the aviation engineering ecosystem. The initiative also allows the airline to engage with emerging talent and explore new ideas that could drive future innovation.

Emirates retrofit

The programme builds on Emirates’ broader sustainability initiatives, including its extensive fleet retrofit programme.

The airline is currently undertaking one of the aviation industry’s largest aircraft refurbishment projects, with a multi-billion-dollar investment to fully upgrade 219 Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft.

As part of the initiative, materials removed from aircraft during the retrofit process are being given a new purpose through in-house upcycling projects led by Emirates Engineering in Dubai.

The engineering team is converting retired aircraft components into handcrafted products, helping reduce waste while extending the lifespan of materials that would otherwise be discarded.

Material Futures Studio builds on existing initiatives such as the Aircrafted by Emirates collection, which produces limited-edition luggage, bags, and accessories using reclaimed aircraft materials.

Another initiative, Aircrafted KIDS, repurposes fabrics and other materials recovered during the retrofit programme into handmade backpacks for children. Emirates said that more than 4,000 backpacks have already been donated to children in 11 countries.
