A former British official has recalled Sheikh Rashid’s presence at the historic 4–2 World Cup final.

Dubai: The late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum is reported to have attended the 1966 FIFA World Cup final between England and West Germany at Wembley Stadium in London on July 30, 1966, according to a former British official’s account recorded in an oral history interview.

The details were shared by Sir Terence Clark, who served as Assistant Political Agent in Dubai from 1965 to 1968, during an interview conducted by the Al Maktoum Archive team.

Clark recalled that Sheikh Rashid was present at the historic 1966 World Cup final, where England defeated West Germany 4–2 after extra time to win their first and only World Cup title. The match, held at Wembley Stadium and attended by more than 96,000 spectators, remains one of football’s most iconic and widely remembered finals.

The account offers insight into Sheikh Rashid’s overseas engagements during a period of rapid transformation in Dubai, when he was leading major infrastructure and economic development initiatives that would go on to shape the emirate’s modern growth trajectory.

Clark served in Dubai during the final years of the British political presence in the Trucial States, prior to the formation of the United Arab Emirates in 1971. His interview is part of the Al Maktoum Archive’s efforts to preserve eyewitness accounts and historical memories related to Dubai and its leadership.

The account underscores a rare historical link between one of football’s most iconic sporting moments and a leader widely regarded as one of the key architects of modern Dubai.
