UAE warns that unused apps may pose a hidden cybersecurity risk.

Date:

Slow performance and full storage are being flagged as warning signs of increasing cyber threats.

The UAE Cyber Security Council has warned that everyday digital devices can become vulnerable to cyber risks when burdened with unnecessary files and unused applications.

It added that neglected apps and digital clutter can open the door to malicious software, heightening the risk of cyberattacks and data exposure.

Regular clean-ups help reduce cyber risks. Authorities stressed that adopting preventive cybersecurity practices and routinely scanning devices are essential for protecting both personal and organisational data.

The council said that spending just a few minutes each week cleaning up devices can boost performance and lower security risks.

Stay secure: Make digital hygiene a habit
The council urged users to turn digital clean-up into a weekly routine, including:

  • Deleting unnecessary files and unused apps
  • Using updated security software
  • Keeping systems and applications up to date

The council added that these preventive measures can help reduce cyber incidents by up to 30 per cent.

Warning signs your device needs cleaning
Users should watch for signs such as:

  • Slow device performance
  • Full storage
  • Unusual messages or repeated errors
  • Unknown or unused applications

Weekly 10-minute routine advised
The council recommended setting aside 10 minutes each week to:

  • Managing device storage
  • Reviewing installed applications
  • Updating system software

Officials reiterated that maintaining good digital hygiene is essential to protecting the UAE’s cyber environment and ensuring a safer digital experience.
