Switzerland defeat Algeria 2–0 to reach the World Cup last 16.

Manzambi stars as Switzerland ease past Algeria to book a place in the last 16.

Switzerland advanced to the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a composed 2–0 victory over Algeria late on Thursday (Friday in Asia), as Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye scored in either half to send Murat Yakin’s side comfortably through at BC Place.

The lively Johan Manzambi created the opener, surging down the left flank before crossing for Breel Embolo to tap in, while Dan Ndoye added the second with a composed finish.

Switzerland, appearing at their sixth consecutive World Cup, controlled much of the knockout match with disciplined defending and clinical finishing, frustrating an Algerian side that struggled to turn possession into clear scoring chances.

Switzerland made a fast start and broke the deadlock after just 10 minutes.

Midfielder Johan Manzambi, one of Switzerland’s standout performers, burst down the left flank, gliding past two Algerian defenders before delivering a low cross into the six-yard area.

Breel Embolo arrived unmarked to calmly tap the ball into an open net, giving Switzerland an early 1–0 lead.

Algeria tried to respond through captain Riyad Mahrez and midfielder Houssem Aouar, but Switzerland’s defence, led by Manuel Akanji and Nico Elvedi, restricted them to few clear chances before half-time.

Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel was rarely troubled as Switzerland maintained their defensive organisation.

Double advantage

Switzerland nearly doubled their lead before half-time but wasted a gilt-edged chance when Fabian Rieder missed an open goal, in what commentators described as one of the tournament’s most glaring misses.

Despite that setback, the Swiss remained firmly in control.

The second goal arrived almost immediately after the restart.

Within a minute of the second half, Algeria failed to clear their lines under sustained pressure, allowing Dan Ndoye to latch onto the loose ball and fire a precise finish past goalkeeper Luca Zidane for a 2–0 lead.

With a two-goal cushion, Switzerland dictated the tempo, with the midfield pairing of Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler controlling possession and denying Algeria any real route back into the match.

Algeria pushed bodies forward late on but lacked the cutting edge to trouble Switzerland’s well-organised defence.

For Switzerland, the result extends a strong run of consistency on football’s biggest stage.

Getting past World Cup knockout rounds

Switzerland have now reached the World Cup knockout stages in five of their last six appearances and will look to go beyond the Round of 16, a barrier that has halted them in recent tournaments.

Algeria’s campaign ended in disappointment as the Desert Foxes failed to progress beyond the knockout phase for the first time since their 2014 Round of 16 run.

Despite flashes from Riyad Mahrez and Houssem Aouar, Vladimir Petković’s side struggled to break down one of the tournament’s most disciplined defences. Switzerland will now face the winner of Colombia vs Ghana.
