An awareness video featuring real CCTV footage highlights the dangers of speeding and running red lights.

Sharjah: Sharjah Police has released a powerful road safety awareness video featuring real CCTV footage of a traffic incident, warning motorists against rushing, reckless driving, and red-light violations at busy intersections.

The video, part of an ongoing traffic safety campaign, begins inside the traffic monitoring and operations centre before transitioning to surveillance footage of a busy signal-controlled junction at night. Vehicles are shown moving through the intersection under normal traffic conditions, underscoring how quickly routine driving can become dangerous due to a momentary lapse in judgment.

Police said the footage is intended to emphasise strict compliance with traffic laws, particularly at intersections, and the importance of maintaining full attention while driving. The campaign highlights that speeding, rushing to beat traffic signals, and other unsafe driving behaviours put not only drivers at risk, but also passengers and other road users.

In the incident shown, a motorist is seen driving recklessly by attempting to beat the traffic signal and running a red light—a violation that greatly increases the risk of serious collisions at junctions. The vehicle is clearly identified in the footage, underscoring the severity of the offence.

Sharjah Police emphasised that red-light violations are among the most serious traffic offences under UAE law, carrying a Dh1,000 fine, 12 black points on the driving licence, and vehicle impoundment for up to 30 days. Repeat violations can result in harsher penalties, including longer impoundment periods and potential licence suspension once 24 black points are accumulated.

Authorities also highlighted the use of advanced smart surveillance systems installed across major roads to detect violations in real time and deter reckless driving behaviour.

The video concludes with a strong safety message urging motorists not to let impatience lead to tragedy, reminding drivers that rushing or ignoring traffic signals can have fatal consequences.

Sharjah Police said the campaign is part of broader efforts to reduce road accidents and improve traffic discipline across the emirate, calling on all motorists to remain patient, obey traffic signals, and prioritise safety at all times.
