An Emirati traveller recounted how the UAE ambassador personally stepped in after hours of questioning at a land border crossing, resolving the matter within minutes.

A five-hour border complication faced by two Emirati travellers was resolved within just three to five minutes after the UAE Ambassador to Russia stepped in, transforming a lengthy ordeal into a smooth process, according to one of the citizens involved.
Speaking on Direct Line, Emirati traveller Tariq Al Harthi recalled how he and another UAE citizen were returning from a road trip across Europe when they arrived at a land border crossing in one of Russia’s regions.
Before setting off, he said the pair had reviewed the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ travel advisories and found no warnings or alerts related to their planned route. Despite carrying valid documents, the two travellers were detained at the border for around five and a half hours and repeatedly questioned about their itinerary, the countries they had visited, and the purpose of their journey.
Al Harthi said he was initially reluctant to contact the UAE Embassy in Moscow, assuming the mission would be dealing with more urgent matters. However, after encouragement from his travel companion, he reached out to the embassy and said UAE Ambassador to Russia Dr Mohammed Al Jaber personally answered the call.
According to Al Harthi, the ambassador asked for details of the border crossing and assured him that the issue would be addressed. Within three to five minutes, border officials received a phone call, after which the travellers noticed an immediate improvement in how they were treated.
“They apologised, asked whether we wished to continue our trip or return, and completed the necessary procedures without any further delays,” Al Harthi said. He added that the ambassador later called him personally after they had crossed the border to confirm they had entered safely.
Reflecting on the experience, Al Harthi said it highlighted the support UAE citizens receive while abroad. He thanked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ambassador Al Jaber for their swift response, praising what he described as the around-the-clock assistance offered by the UAE’s diplomatic missions.
He also encouraged Emiratis travelling overseas to register for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ “Twajudi” service before departure, noting that many travellers may underestimate its value.
“You never know when you might need assistance. In the event of a natural disaster or any emergency, authorities will know where you are and can reach out to provide support,” he said.
