Chapter 1197 recap: ‘Love Is Defense’
The chapter’s title draws on Ivankov’s lesson to Sanji about learning to love himself. That message takes centre stage as Sanji faces Killingham, choosing to protect his own body — the one his late mother gave him and which has carried him through countless battles.
As he reflects on the fights he has survived, Sanji also considers his siblings’ genetically modified bodies and how differently his own journey has unfolded.
Armament Haki alone is not enough to defeat Killingham. The Holy Knight covers himself in Omen armour and declares that only Conqueror’s Haki can break through it. Sanji responds by igniting new flames around his leg, resembling his Ifrit Jambe technique.
He blocks Killingham’s Longinus spear and cracks its tip, although the impact sends him crashing to the ground. When he gets back up, however, his Haki appears to have reached a new level. He describes Zoro as Luffy’s sword and himself as the captain’s shield.
Sanji then unleashes a blazing kick infused with Conqueror’s Haki, shattering both the Longinus spear’s shaft and Killingham’s helmet. The chapter ends with the Holy Knight spitting blood.
One Piece Chapter 1198 spoilers: What early leaks suggest
Stop reading here if you want to avoid spoilers.
Early leaks have begun circulating. Although such reports can sometimes prove accurate, they remain unofficial and should be treated with caution until the chapter’s release.
- Title: The chapter is reportedly titled ‘The Island of Monsters’.
- Sanji’s victory: Sanji is said to break Killingham’s armour with a single kick, sending the Holy Knight flying. Killingham reportedly flees in terror, in a scene that mirrors Sommers’ reaction to Zoro. The parallel could suggest Oda is drawing attention to the two Straw Hats’ strength.
- The children: The Rain God Zaza MMA reportedly stretches towards the ship and sacrifices her arm to ensure the kidnapped children reach safety.
- Imu raises the stakes: After sensing Imu’s Haki, Killingham reportedly witnesses Imu transform into a third form — a gigantic creature with a long torso, an elongated neck and large horns. Loki fights back in his hybrid Zoan form, but Imu is said to defeat him with a single blow.
- The final page: Luffy reportedly appears on a rooftop in the giant village, watching Zaza MMA as the giants look on in shock. His appearance in a new form is said to be the chapter’s closing reveal.
