How the new Al Taawun Tunnel project aims to ease Sharjah–Dubai commuter traffic congestion.

The Al Taawun Tunnel: what it is, why it matters, and the changes expected this weekend.

Dubai: One of Sharjah’s most congested commuter corridors is set for a long-awaited upgrade.

The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority) will begin a temporary partial closure of Al Taawun Street from Saturday, 13 June, as work starts on the Al Taawun Tunnel Development Project. Diversion routes will be in place throughout the construction period, and motorists are advised to plan extra travel time and follow traffic signage.

Here’s what commuters need to know about the project and the changes taking effect on the route.

What is the Al Taawun Tunnel Development Project?

The project involves building a new underpass tunnel at the Al Taawun roundabout, one of the key traffic bottlenecks on the Sharjah–Dubai corridor.

Instead of forcing vehicles to pass through the roundabout at surface level, the tunnel will allow traffic to move underneath it, helping eliminate the stop-start congestion that currently builds up at the junction.

It is part of Sharjah’s broader initiative to modernise transport infrastructure, ease congestion, and improve mobility for the hundreds of thousands of residents who commute daily between the two emirates.

Sharjah–Dubai traffic: What drives congestion on Al Taawun Street

A key gateway between Sharjah and Dubai, Al Taawun is one of the primary routes used by daily commuters travelling between the two emirates.

High residential density: Areas such as Al Taawun, Al Nahda, and Al Khan are among Sharjah’s most densely populated neighbourhoods, generating heavy traffic flow throughout the day.

Multiple roads converging at one point: The Al Taawun junction connects several major corridors, including Al Ittihad Road, Al Nahda, Al Khan, and the Corniche area. This convergence leads to frequent bottlenecks, especially during peak hours.

Peak-hour congestion: Morning and evening rush periods—typically between 7–9am and 5–8pm—regularly experience severe slowdowns and standstill traffic approaching the roundabout from both directions.

Limited alternative crossings: Many commuters travelling between eastern Dubai and Sharjah rely on the same road network and bridges, so congestion escalates quickly when traffic volume rises or when incidents occur.

How the tunnel will benefit Sharjah commuters

Faster Dubai–Sharjah commutes: Al Taawun is one of Sharjah’s main entry points from Dubai, especially for residents of Al Taawun, Al Nahda, Al Khan, and Al Majaz. Frequent bottlenecks at the roundabout often lead to long delays during peak hours, making it one of the busiest junctions in the emirate. The new tunnel is expected to streamline traffic flow and significantly reduce travel times through the area.

Reduced traffic congestion: The project will replace or upgrade the existing roundabout with a grade-separated road system, allowing vehicles to move continuously without stopping at signals or yielding at the junction.

Improved connectivity: The development is expected to streamline traffic flow between Al Taawun Street, Al Nahda Bridge, Al Corniche Street, and nearby residential communities.

Traffic diversions in effect: where to go now

A temporary partial closure of Al Taawun Street has been implemented as construction work continues. The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority has announced the following diversion routes:

Towards Dubai:
Vehicles heading to Dubai and Al Nahda Bridge will be redirected via Al Corniche Street.

Towards Sharjah:
Motorists coming from Al Nahda Bridge towards Sharjah will be diverted onto the newly developed Al Taawun Street.

The SRTA has urged drivers to follow all directional signage, comply with temporary traffic arrangements, and observe road safety instructions throughout the construction period.

The bigger picture

The Al Taawun Tunnel Development Project reflects Sharjah’s ongoing investment in road infrastructure to meet the needs of a growing and increasingly mobile population.

While the construction phase will require temporary adjustments for road users, the completed tunnel is expected to deliver a significant long-term upgrade to one of the emirate’s busiest transport corridors.

The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority has urged all motorists to cooperate with the temporary traffic arrangements and prioritise safety while passing through the area during the construction period.
