European flights face hoax bomb threats for third day this week as fighter jets escort aircraft

Date:

Bomb scares trigger emergency landings and fighter jet escorts across Europe.

Hoax bomb threats were reported on a Finnair flight from Helsinki to Rome and a Wizz Air flight from Milan to Warsaw on Thursday. The Wizz Air aircraft was diverted to Vienna, the airlines said.

The Helsinki-Rome flight was escorted to Rome by a fighter jet and inspected by bomb disposal experts, an airport spokesman told AFP.

In a statement, Wizz Air said the diversion was carried out in line with established safety protocols and procedures.

Also on Thursday, a flight travelling from Dublin to Rome was diverted to France, where military aircraft escorted it following a suspected bomb threat, French authorities said.

According to flight-tracking website Flightradar, the diverted aircraft appeared to belong to the Aer Lingus fleet.

It was the third day this week that bomb threats had disrupted air traffic across Europe, with around 10 flights targeted on Tuesday.

The threats, which were later found to be hoaxes, led to the closure of an airport in Warsaw and the deployment of Italian Air Force fighter jets to escort aircraft.

On Monday, a Wizz Air flight travelling from London’s Luton Airport to Sofia was diverted after a bomb threat and made an emergency landing in Budapest.
