The Murdoch University Dubai students won Dh50,000 grant in 2018 and have secured another Dh25,000 from the Expo team.

A group of Dubai students, who built a bio air-purification system that aims to improve indoor air quality, have become one of the 28 teams that won funding from the Expo 2020 Dubai to develop their creative projects further.

The Murdoch University Dubai students won Dh50,000 grant in 2018 and have secured another Dh25,000 from the Expo team as part of the University Innovation Programme.

“GreenAir is a bio air-purification system that aims to provide better indoor air quality by using plants to remove toxins, allergens, particulates and different germs and bacteria. The physical apparatus of the system will be equipped with an IoT module to monitor the performance of our system, generate monthly reports, and automate maintenance alerts,” said Mariyam Iftikhar, one of the four team members, who are working towards completing this eco-friendly project, which will be featured at the Expo.

“Similar systems in the market are available, however, they are either industrial-scale living walls or small consumer products called smart pots used in small spaces. GreenAir provides a fit between the two as it is aimed at medium-scale deployment for spaces such as malls, offices, and so on. A prototype has been developed and the final product is currently in the designing stage, heading for manufacturing soon.” “We were excited to hear that our project won Dh50,000 grant as this is the highest amount that is given to the best projects with the most potential. After having analysed our impressive progress so far, our team was able to secure an additional Dh25,000. We are thrilled to be working on GreenAir more than ever.”
