Astronaut Hazzaa AlMansoori to return to UAE on Saturday

Date:

AlMansoori launched to the station on September 25 and landed back on earth on October 3.

The first Emirati astronaut Hazzaa AlMansoori is coming home to the UAE on October 12 after a successful mission onboard the International Space Station.

AlMansoori launched to the station on September 25 and landed back on earth on October 3. He stayed in Russia’s Star City for post-mission health checks, medical tests and a press conference that took place on Wednesday.

His backup for this mission, Sultan Al Neyadi, will also accompany him in his return, as well as Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre Chairman Hamad Obaid AlMansoori and the Director-General Yousuf Hamad AlShaibani.

The medical tests were part of a scientific study which are meant to help determine the effects of microgravity on the human body. It was the first time that these experiments are performed on someone from the Arab region.

AlMansoori said during the press conference: “Our message is to create a role model in the Arab region, like we saw in Yuri Gagarin. We always speak about him being first in space and he really inspired us. Now, UAE has its own astronaut and it’s a great message to the next generation. And I promise that each child that saw us on the ISS, he or she will be something in the future. I hope this is just the beginning and other countries will also be interested in participating in this space exploration.”
