Halloween night sky: ‘Witch Head’ nebula appears near Orion tonight

Date:

UAE skywatchers set for a spectacular cosmic Halloween display tonight.

Dubai: Stargazers have a special treat this Halloween, as the nebula popularly known as the Witch Head appears in the eastern sky near the Orion constellation before midnight, according to the International Astronomy Center.

Scientifically designated IC 2118, the nebula is located close to Rigel, the brightest star in Orion. In photographs, its outline resembles a witch’s face, with a pointed nose and chin seemingly turned towards the brilliant blue star.

The centre said the nebula spans approximately 70 light years and is located around 900 light years from Earth.

IC 2118 is a reflection nebula, meaning it shines by reflecting Rigel’s light rather than generating its own. Its distinctive blue appearance is caused by cosmic dust particles, which scatter blue light more efficiently than red light. Some scientists suggest that the nebula could be the remnants of an ancient supernova.

How to spot it from the UAE

Residents can also catch a glimpse of the Witch Head as it rises above the UAE alongside Orion. At this time of year, the constellation becomes visible in the eastern sky late in the evening and reaches its highest point after midnight. The hours leading up to dawn provide the best viewing opportunity.

The nebula is a popular subject among astrophotographers. However, its faint details cannot be seen with the naked eye or ordinary binoculars. Long-exposure photography can reveal its features, using a camera attached to a telescope or long-focus lens and secured to a tripod or tracking mount.

Desert locations far from urban lighting provide the most favourable viewing conditions. To locate the nebula, first identify Rigel, the bright blue-white star at the lower right of Orion. The Witch Head is positioned just west of it.

Even without photography equipment, Orion is relatively easy to identify on clear autumn nights. Its prominent stars offer an impressive view as the cooler season sets in.

The centre described the Witch Head as one of the night sky’s most fascinating and imagination-inspiring celestial objects, making it an especially fitting attraction for Halloween.
