US–Iran Tensions: Key Updates for UAE Residents on October 9, 2026

Date:

Houthi Attacks and Strait of Hormuz Tensions Raise Travel and Security Concerns in the UAE.

Tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz remain elevated, although US President Donald Trump has indicated that diplomatic discussions with Iran are making progress.

Trump described the ongoing negotiations as “productive” and stated that the United States would not launch an attack against Iran before the November 3 midterm elections.

His remarks, shared on Truth Social, suggest a possible opportunity for diplomatic engagement amid continuing regional uncertainty.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran is reviewing Washington’s response to Iran’s proposed seven-day plan for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking to Iranian news agency IRNA, Araghchi indicated that Iran expects to respond within the next few days.

He confirmed that indirect negotiations between the two countries are continuing through intermediaries.

Under the proposed arrangement, measures would be implemented in stages, with maritime traffic expected to resume on the sixth day, followed by broader negotiations on the seventh day.

No Ceasefire Agreement Reached as Oil Prices Decline

Despite the latest diplomatic developments, the discussions have not yet resulted in a formal ceasefire or peace agreement.

Nevertheless, financial markets responded positively to indications of possible progress between Washington and Tehran.

As of 8.20am Gulf time on Friday, October 9, Brent crude oil had declined by 1.27 per cent to $102.96 per barrel.

Meanwhile, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell by $1.10, or approximately 1.20 per cent, to $90.39 per barrel.

The decline reflected the market’s reaction to renewed diplomatic efforts, although uncertainty surrounding regional security continued.

Houthi Attacks Disrupt Flights to Saudi Arabia

While diplomatic discussions continue, security concerns have intensified in Yemen and neighbouring areas.

Iran-backed Houthi forces have carried out fresh attacks targeting airports in Saudi Arabia, causing widespread disruption to aviation operations in Riyadh.

Several international airlines, including Lufthansa, Air India, IndiGo and Philippine Airlines (PAL), cancelled flights to the Saudi capital following the attacks.

By Thursday afternoon, nearly half of the flights scheduled to depart from Riyadh airport had reportedly been cancelled.

The disruptions have also affected wider regional flight operations, creating uncertainty for passengers travelling through affected routes.

Armed Attacks Reported in Southeastern Iran

Separately, southeastern Iran has experienced a series of armed attacks targeting military and law enforcement personnel.

According to the Baluch rights organisation Haalvsh, more than a dozen Iranian military and police personnel were reportedly killed or injured in four separate incidents within a 24-hour period.

The Popular Fighters Front claimed responsibility for attacks in Nikshahr, Nosratabad and Jalq.

Another police officer was reportedly shot dead in Faryab.

However, the reported casualty figures have not been independently verified.

What Rising Oil Prices Mean for UAE Residents

Despite heightened tensions across the Gulf region, everyday activities in the UAE remain largely unaffected, with airports continuing to operate.

However, the recent escalation has contributed to volatility in international oil markets.

Higher crude oil prices can eventually increase fuel and transportation expenses, potentially affecting businesses and consumers.

For UAE residents, prolonged increases in energy prices could gradually translate into higher commuting and logistics costs, depending on market conditions and local pricing adjustments.

Although diplomatic discussions between the United States and Iran offer the possibility of easing tensions, developments involving the Strait of Hormuz and regional security remain important factors to watch.

Latest Developments Affecting UAE Residents

UAE authorities have indicated that there is no nationwide suspension of schools, business operations, airport services or other essential facilities.

However, the continuing tensions between the United States and Iran are affecting regional aviation, maritime transport and security conditions.

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant, monitor developments and rely on official government announcements for accurate information.

Security Situation and Public Safety

During the conflict, UAE defence systems have previously intercepted numerous missiles and drones.

Authorities have repeatedly advised the public to avoid approaching or handling debris from intercepted aerial threats, as such materials may pose serious safety risks.

Additional warnings and precautionary instructions may be issued at short notice if further security incidents occur.

Residents should therefore remain attentive to announcements from emergency management authorities and local police departments.

What the Regional Conflict Means for UAE Residents

Daily Life and Essential Services

There is currently no indication of a nationwide closure of educational institutions, businesses, airports or essential public services across the UAE.

For most residents, the immediate consequences of regional tensions are more likely to involve changes to travel arrangements, increased energy expenses and potential delays in the movement of goods.

Air Travel and Flight Operations

Airports across the UAE remain operational, although airlines may modify flight routes, revise departure schedules or temporarily suspend certain regional services depending on security developments.

Passengers travelling to or through Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq and other Gulf destinations are advised to confirm their flight status directly with their airlines before leaving for the airport.

Last-minute schedule adjustments remain possible if regional airspace restrictions change.

Safety Precautions

If residents hear air-defence activity or become aware of suspected missile or drone debris, they should follow instructions issued by the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) and local police.

People should avoid approaching, touching or photographing suspicious fragments and should report such discoveries to the relevant authorities.

Official government communication channels should remain the primary source of information regarding emergency warnings and precautionary measures.

Major Regional Developments to Monitor

Several factors could influence security, travel and economic conditions across the UAE in the coming days.

  • Houthi activity in Saudi Arabia: Further attacks could cause additional flight cancellations, delays or changes to regional aviation schedules.
  • Strait of Hormuz security: Any new incidents near the strategic waterway could disrupt oil tanker movements, maritime trade and shipping insurance costs.
  • Regional airspace restrictions: Airlines may need to adjust routes or suspend services if security conditions change, particularly around Saudi and Iranian airspace.
  • US–Iran military developments: Additional military action by either side could increase regional tensions and raise concerns about further missile or drone attacks affecting Gulf countries.
  • Energy and shipping prices: Fluctuations in global oil markets and transportation expenses could eventually influence fuel prices, logistics costs and the prices of imported goods.

Practical Safety and Travel Advice for UAE Residents

1. Confirm Flight Details Before Travelling

Passengers should regularly check airline websites, mobile applications and official airport announcements for updated flight information.

Travellers should also be prepared for possible last-minute changes to departure times, routes or cancellations.

2. Monitor Official Government Announcements

Residents are encouraged to follow updates from the Emirates News Agency (WAM), NCEMA, local police departments and Civil Defence authorities.

These organisations can provide important information about public safety, emergency procedures and any temporary precautionary measures.

3. Stay Away From Suspicious Debris

Anyone who discovers suspected missile or drone fragments should maintain a safe distance and avoid touching, moving or photographing the objects.

Such incidents should be reported immediately to the appropriate authorities, allowing trained personnel to handle the situation safely.

4. Prepare for Possible Increases in Living Costs

Continued regional instability could place upward pressure on fuel prices, maritime transportation costs and insurance-related expenses.

If these increases persist, businesses may face higher operating costs, potentially affecting the prices of transported and imported products.

Residents may therefore benefit from reviewing their household budgets and preparing for possible changes in transportation and everyday expenses.

While essential services in the UAE continue to operate, remaining informed through reliable official sources and taking sensible precautions can help residents respond appropriately to any further regional developments.
