Sourav Ganguly and wife Dona receive death threats, approach police.
Dubai: Former India cricket captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and his wife, Dona Ganguly, have approached the police after receiving letters containing death threats, according to police sources on Monday.
The complaint was filed by Ganguly’s personal assistant. Police said two letters addressed to Sourav and Dona Ganguly were opened at the office of the Bengal cricket association president on Monday.
The letters, written in English, allegedly contained serious threats to the lives and safety of the couple and those working with them.
According to family sources, similar letters had reportedly been received over the past six months. However, the threatening tone of the latest letters prompted the family to approach the police.
A written complaint was lodged at Thakurpukur Police Station in Kolkata, while the state government’s security department was also informed.
According to the complaint, the family had earlier received letters containing objectionable remarks from unidentified individuals. However, they initially chose not to take the messages seriously, assuming they were driven by personal resentment.
However, the latest letters were seen as a serious escalation, containing explicit threats to the couple’s lives and personal safety.
In its complaint, the family urged the police to identify those responsible and take necessary action to ensure the safety of Ganguly, his wife and their staff.
Police have launched an investigation into the matter and are taking steps to ensure the safety of the former India captain and his family.
