Montenegro’s temporary visa-free scheme has made the Balkan destination easier to visit for UAE residents. However, travellers should check these five key eligibility requirements before booking their trip.
If Montenegro has recently been added to your summer travel plans, UAE residents have reason to be excited. The Balkan destination has introduced a temporary visa-free entry arrangement for eligible residents, making it more convenient to plan a European holiday.
However, travellers should keep one key point in mind: entry eligibility is determined by your passport, not your Emirates ID. While the new exemption benefits many UAE residents, requirements vary based on nationality and residency status.
What if you hold an Emirati passport?
For holders of Emirati passports, travelling to Montenegro is relatively simple. UAE citizens can enter the country without a visa for stays of up to 90 days, as long as they have a valid passport.
However, visa-free entry does not mean travellers can arrive without supporting documents. Border authorities may request proof of accommodation, a return or onward flight ticket, evidence of sufficient funds to cover the stay and a passport valid for at least three months beyond the intended departure date.
What about expatriates living in the UAE?
For expatriates living in the UAE, entry requirements depend on the passport they hold. Simply having a UAE residence visa or Emirates ID does not automatically grant visa-free access to Montenegro.
If your nationality is already covered under Montenegro’s visa-free policy — including many European countries, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand — you can enter under the standard rules that apply to your passport.
Travellers may also qualify for visa-free entry if they hold a valid multiple-entry Schengen, UK or US visa, or a residence permit from these regions. Montenegro permits many visitors with these documents to enter without obtaining a separate Montenegrin visa, typically for short stays of up to 30 days.
Those who do not meet either condition will generally need to apply for a Montenegro visa before travelling through the Embassy of Montenegro in Abu Dhabi.
New temporary visa-free scheme for UAE residents
A new temporary exemption introduced this year has made travel easier for certain foreign residents of the UAE. Running from May 1 to October 1, 2026, the scheme allows eligible UAE residents to visit Montenegro without a visa for up to 10 days.
To qualify, travellers must:
- Have maintained continuous UAE residency for at least three years
- Travel on a direct flight from the UAE to Montenegro
- Hold a passport valid for the entire duration of their stay
- Provide a confirmed hotel reservation or tour package
- Carry a return ticket
The exemption is not a visa-on-arrival facility and cannot be extended beyond the 10-day limit. Travellers who reach Montenegro through a transit country rather than a direct UAE flight will not qualify and will need to follow the country’s standard visa requirements.
Important points after arrival
Once in Montenegro, foreign visitors must register with local authorities within 24 hours of arrival. Guests staying at hotels or licensed accommodation are typically registered by the property. Those staying in private apartments or Airbnb-style rentals may need to complete the registration themselves or ensure their host does so.
Travellers should also monitor their permitted stay period based on their entry category. Emirati passport holders can generally remain for up to 90 days, while visitors entering under the temporary UAE residency exemption are limited to 10 days.
