Thunderstorms and strong winds set to hit Saudi Arabia through Friday

Date:

Public urged to exercise caution as heavy rain and flash floods are forecast.

Saudi Arabia is set to experience continued thunderstorms, strong winds and unstable weather conditions across most regions through Friday, authorities said, urging residents to remain cautious.

The General Directorate of Civil Defence advised the public to stay in safe locations, avoid flood-prone valleys and areas of water accumulation, and refrain from swimming, while following official safety instructions issued عبر media and social platforms.

In the Mecca Region, moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast, raising the risk of flash floods, hail and strong downbursts that could stir dust and sand. Affected areas include Turbah, Al Moya, Al Khurma, Ranyah, Taif, Maysan and Adham.

The Riyadh Region is also expected to receive light to moderate rainfall, with potential risks of flooding, hail and dust-raising winds affecting areas such as Wadi Al Dawasir, Al Sulayyil, Al Aflaj, Afif, Al Dawadmi and Al Quwayiyah.

Elsewhere in Saudi Arabia, regions including Asir, Jazan, Al Baha, Qassim, Hail, Medina, Tabuk, Al Jouf and the Northern Borders are forecast to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, while the Eastern Province is expected to see lighter showers.

The National Centre of Meteorology said the system will bring active downdraft winds reaching 60 km/h or more, reducing visibility and lifting dust, along with a chance of hail in scattered areas.

It also warned of rough sea conditions along coastal areas due to strong winds, urging caution for marine activities, and highlighted an increased risk of flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas across Saudi Arabia.
