How UAE residents are making a difference in animal rescue

Two bunnies, Romeo and Juliet, left abandoned in a park on Valentine’s Day. A rabbit left paralysed after a tragic accident. Cats roaming the desert, ear-tipped or not, hoping for a family that never returns. A dog stranded on the side of a busy highway as cars speed past.
Every day brings another animal in need. Another life that depends on a stranger deciding to care.
Across the United Arab Emirates, informal animal rescue networks operate tirelessly. Many are connected through sprawling WhatsApp groups and social media channels, raising the alarm whenever an animal is abandoned, injured, or lost.
Over the years, we’ve met individuals who have rescued more than 500 cats, sending dozens abroad to loving homes; others who regularly patrol neighbourhoods to carry out TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) programs; and many who cover veterinary costs out of their own pockets.
You can read more about the people supporting TNR initiatives here.
So how does it all come together? And how do these networks keep going?
We spoke with several rescuers who shared what it truly takes to help animals feel safe and cared for once more.
