Video: Thunderstorms and heavy rain hit Abu Dhabi as authorities issue safety warnings

Date:

The NCM reports that the unstable weather is being caused by a surface low-pressure system.

Dubai: Thunder, lightning, and steady rainfall swept across Abu Dhabi on Monday, as unstable weather brought much-needed rain to parts of the emirate.

Abu Dhabi Police urged drivers to exercise caution, advising them to follow variable speed limits displayed on electronic signs and gantries.

Officials warned that reduced visibility and wet road conditions could raise accident risks, urging motorists to prioritise safety.

Civil Defence warns of flood-prone areas
Abu Dhabi Civil Defence urged residents to stay alert during rainfall and avoid areas where water may accumulate. Authorities cautioned against entering low-lying zones prone to flash floods, emphasising the need for vigilance amid changing weather conditions.

Weather system behind instability
The National Center of Meteorology reported that the unstable conditions are caused by a surface low-pressure system combined with an upper-air trough.

This interaction is enhancing cloud formation and increasing the likelihood of convective rainfall across scattered areas.

Safety guidelines during thunderstorms
The NCM advised the public to follow these key safety measures during the current weather conditions:

  • Avoid open or elevated areas during lightning and thunder
  • Exercise extra caution while driving in rain and low-visibility conditions
  • Stay away from flood-prone areas and standing water
  • Be alert to sudden downdraft winds that could move loose objects

Authorities also urged residents to rely on official updates and avoid sharing rumours as weather conditions continue to change.
