UAE intercepts Iranian drone amid heightened Strait of Hormuz tensions.
Security risks around the Strait of Hormuz remain elevated as renewed US-Iran military exchanges fuel fresh concerns over shipping, oil supplies and the safety of commercial vessels using the strategic waterway.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency reported on Tuesday that a tanker was struck by three unidentified projectiles while completing its outbound transit of the Strait of Hormuz, around 17 nautical miles east of Khasab, Oman.
No casualties or environmental damage were reported. Authorities are investigating the incident, while UKMTO urged vessels operating in the area to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity.
The incident highlights how any renewed confrontation between Washington and Tehran could pose further risks to shipping through the waterway, while pushing up insurance and freight costs and potentially driving crude oil prices higher.
The latest developments follow US strikes on two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island near the Strait of Hormuz, as well as Iranian claims of retaliatory ballistic missile attacks targeting US military positions in Jordan and the UAE.
The UAE said it intercepted a drone approaching from Iran over its territorial waters, while rejecting Tehran’s claim that it had successfully attacked Al Minhad Air Base near Dubai.
The escalation has renewed concerns over security, commercial flights and shipping through the region, including the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints.
The UAE Ministry of Defence said reports of a missile attack on Al Minhad were “false” and separately confirmed that the UAE Air Force had intercepted an unmanned aerial vehicle approaching from Iran.
No casualties or damage have been publicly reported by UAE authorities.

Oil prices extended their gains on Tuesday following renewed US-Iran military exchanges and US President Donald Trump’s warning that the United States would hit Iran “hard”.
The renewed conflict has raised concerns that higher energy prices could keep inflation elevated and put further pressure on central banks, including the US Federal Reserve, to maintain tighter monetary policy. The market reaction has weighed on equities while supporting crude oil prices.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran would “immediately” take reciprocal action if the US returned to the terms of a June memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at ending the US-Iran war.
Pezeshkian made the remarks at a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Kyrgyzstan, according to the Iranian presidency.
“I state explicitly that if the United States returns to its commitments under the aforementioned memorandum of understanding (MOU), the Islamic Republic of Iran will immediately take reciprocal action,” he said.
Gold came under short-term pressure in early Asian trading, slipping to around $4,440.34 an ounce after trading near $4,454.68 earlier in the session. The decline has been attributed to rising oil prices and expectations of a more hawkish Federal Reserve, which can weigh on non-yielding assets such as gold.
Gulf oil exports have recovered to roughly two-thirds of pre-war levels, according to Goldman Sachs estimates reported by Bloomberg.
The 15 million to 16 million barrels-per-day figure refers to total oil exports from the Arabian Gulf, rather than necessarily representing all cargoes physically transiting the Strait of Hormuz, according to Goldman Sachs.
The recovery suggests Iran’s ability to disrupt global energy markets through Hormuz may be weakening. However, flows remain below pre-war levels, while the route remains vulnerable to attacks, military escalation and higher shipping insurance costs.
What UAE officials said
The UAE Foreign Ministry described the latest Iranian drone incident as a “dangerous escalation” and a blatant violation of the country’s sovereignty, security and stability.
The ministry said the incident posed a direct threat to the safety of citizens and residents and reserved the UAE’s right to respond.
The Defence Ministry said the armed forces remain on high alert and urged the public to rely only on official government channels for updates.
Iran’s army had claimed that it used dozens of drones.
What residents should do
UAE authorities have cautioned residents against circulating unverified claims, videos and social media posts as the security situation remains fluid.
Residents should continue to follow official instructions and rely on updates from the UAE Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA), police authorities and official state news agencies.
Residents should:
- Avoid sharing unverified videos or claims about attacks, explosions, airspace closures or security measures unless they have been confirmed by UAE authorities.
- Check the live status of their exact flight with the airline before travelling to an airport.
- Keep phones charged and maintain up-to-date emergency contact details for family members, schools and workplaces.
- Call 999 for police, 998 for an ambulance and 997 for civil defence and fire emergencies.
- Avoid visiting military sites, ports or other sensitive locations, and do not share their locations or security activity online.
Flights and schools
Flight schedules remain fluid, with airlines continuing to adjust operations in response to developments in the region.
UAE airports remain operational, but airlines are making rolling adjustments to routes, schedules and cancellations in response to regional airspace restrictions and changing security assessments.
Passengers travelling from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah should check directly with Emirates, Etihad, flydubai, Air Arabia or their respective airline before heading to the airport.
Schools reopened on Monday under a phased return plan, with more than 1.27 million students returning across the UAE. The Ministry of Education’s reduced-hours schedule remains in effect through September 3, unless authorities issue new instructions.
