UAE’s 30-day visa grace period ends today: Key details affected travellers need to know

Date:

UAE grace period for stranded travellers concludes today amid regional flight disruptions.

Today, July 9, marks the expiry of the UAE’s 30-day grace period introduced for travellers affected by regional travel disruptions.

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) launched the measure in June to assist individuals who were unable to depart the country due to exceptional regional circumstances, including airspace closures and flight suspensions that affected travel across parts of the Middle East earlier this year.

With the grace period now coming to an end, affected visa holders, residents, and other eligible individuals are advised to ensure their immigration status has been regularised or that they have completed the required departure procedures to avoid possible overstay fines and other related penalties.

Why was the UAE visa grace period introduced?

In March, the UAE waived overstay fines for individuals who were stranded in the country due to regional tensions involving the US, Israel, and Iran, which resulted in airspace closures and flight suspensions from February 28, 2026. The exemption applied to travellers who were unable to leave the UAE because of these disruptions and was introduced as a humanitarian measure to assist those affected.

After regional conditions stabilised and normal travel operations resumed, authorities announced a final 30-day grace period, which ran from June 10 to July 9, 2026, allowing affected individuals additional time to regularise their status or make necessary travel arrangements.

Who is eligible?

The grace period applies to individuals who were previously exempted from overstay fines after being unable to leave the UAE due to travel disruptions caused by exceptional regional circumstances.

What were the available options?

During the grace period, eligible individuals had the following options:

1. Regularise their immigration status
Those who wished to remain in the UAE could apply to update their status through the relevant immigration channels, including:

  • Residency status amendments.
  • Employment visa sponsorship arrangements.
  • Other legally approved visa and residency options.

2. Depart the UAE
Individuals planning to leave the country were allowed to complete their departure through existing exit procedures without needing additional preliminary steps.

With the grace period ending today, affected individuals who have not taken the necessary steps may now be subject to the standard consequences for overstaying or failing to maintain a valid immigration status.

Key takeaways for travellers

  • The UAE’s 30-day visa grace period ends today, July 9.
  • The measure was introduced to support individuals who were unable to leave the country due to regional travel disruptions.
  • Eligible travellers were given time to either regularise their visa status or depart the UAE.
  • Standard immigration rules and overstay penalties are expected to apply once the grace period comes to an end.
