Woman duped by false identity and fraudulent marriage promise.

The Abu Dhabi Civil Family and Administrative Court has ordered a man to repay Dh270,400 to a woman after he allegedly deceived her on a social media platform by impersonating someone else and making a false marriage promise.

In addition, the court imposed a Dh50,000 fine on the defendant as compensation for the emotional and financial damages caused when he reportedly manipulated the woman into giving him money under various pretexts before severing contact.

Court records show that the woman filed a lawsuit seeking Dh270,400 in repayment, claiming that the man obtained the money from her without any legal justification, according to Al Khaleej Arabic daily.

She also sought 9% late interest from the date the amount became due under a prior criminal judgment until full repayment, along with Dh100,000 in compensation for both material and moral damages.

The claimant told the court that the man initially approached her via a social media platform, assuming a false identity and gradually gaining her trust by developing a personal relationship and claiming his intention to marry her.

To strengthen the deception, he reportedly visited her family home with several people he presented as his relatives, creating the impression that formal engagement arrangements were in progress.

The woman stated that once he had earned her trust, the defendant began asking for money under various pretexts. She initially transferred Dh10,400 to a bank account he provided in multiple instalments, followed by Dh30,000.

She also gave Dh180,000 in cash through a person he claimed was his private driver, under the pretext that the money was needed for his mother’s medical treatment abroad. Additionally, she transferred Dh40,000 and Dh10,000 based on claims that she later discovered to be false.

The court ultimately ordered the defendant to repay the full amount taken from the woman and to pay Dh50,000 in compensation for the damages he caused.
