“Sheikh Mohamed had coffee at my house”: How the UAE President remains closely connected with the people.

Date:

A young Emirati, Meera, said that meeting Sheikh Mohamed “felt like safety itself, as if the nation was standing right in front of me.”

As the UAE marks four years since Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan became President, young Emiratis across the country say his leadership has reshaped their understanding of ambition, resilience, and national service.

For many, meeting Sheikh Mohamed was not just an encounter with a global leader, but a deeply personal experience that left a lasting impression of leadership rooted in humility, compassion, and closeness to the people.

These reflections follow President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s visit to Mohammed Khamis bin Ruwais Al Khaili at his home in Al Ain on May 2, a gesture that highlighted his strong connection with Emirati families and the wider community.

“He makes you feel like you are speaking to a father, not just a President,” said young Emirati Sughera Al Khyeli, reflecting on her meeting with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

She added that one of the most important lessons she learned from him is that “true leadership is built on humility, listening to people, and caring for them with the spirit of both a father and a leader.”

A video showing Sheikh Mohamed interacting with members of the public was also shared.

According to Sughera, Sheikh Mohamed’s attentiveness during their meeting stood out the most.

“He listens carefully and gives everyone his full attention,” she said. “Despite his position, he makes you feel close to him. His humility reflects a genuine care for people.”

She recalled a particularly memorable moment when he began the meeting in a warm, fatherly tone: “How are you, my daughters?” She said those simple words reflected his sincerity and compassion.

Another young Emirati, Meera Al Khyeli, described her first meeting with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as “a moment that did not feel real.”

“I felt an overwhelming sense of awe,” she said, adding that the experience felt like a dream she had long hoped for. Despite its brevity, she said his presence felt warm, natural, and deeply fatherly.

“It did not feel like I was only sitting with the ruler of a country, but with someone genuinely close to people,” she said, noting that she became emotional during the meeting.

For Meera, the encounter reshaped her understanding of leadership. “A true leader is not only someone with authority, but someone who stays close to people and makes them feel safe and valued,” she said.

She also recalled a moment that stayed with her, when Sheikh Mohamed looked at her hand and said: “This is what we hope for; this carries the spirit of Zayed,” a reference to the legacy of the UAE’s founding leader Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Young Emiratis say such moments explain why Sheikh Mohamed continues to resonate strongly with the country’s youth, whom he actively encourages to contribute to the nation’s future.

Meera summed up her experience simply: “It felt like safety itself, as if the nation was standing right in front of me.”
