Seeing higher grocery bills? Here’s what UAE shoppers can do

Date:

Authorities increase inspections while encouraging consumers to flag excessive price hikes.

Dubai: Feeling the pinch at the grocery store? Sudden price increases on vegetables, staples, or everyday essentials can leave shoppers questioning whether the rise is temporary or warrants reporting.

Consumer protection officials advise shoppers to stay alert and be aware that prices can vary between stores. However, unjustified spikes, particularly on essential goods, should be reported so authorities can take prompt action.

Officials from the UAE Ministry of Economy and Tourism emphasize that consumers play a vital role in maintaining fair markets, especially during periods of high demand.

Shop wisely and avoid panic buying

Authorities advise shoppers to approach grocery shopping calmly and purchase only what they need.

Ahmed Ahli, Director of Consumer Protection at the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, that consumers should resist the urge to stockpile goods when prices rise.

“Shop responsibly as always. Don’t overstore items. Buy what you need, consume it, and then purchase more as required,” he said.

Demand often surges during seasonal periods, such as the weeks leading up to Ramadan, when households buy food in larger quantities. Such spikes can temporarily push up prices. Planning ahead and comparing prices between outlets can help shoppers avoid unnecessary spending.

“Shop wisely and plan your purchases, especially during seasonal periods when demand shifts,” Ahli advised.

He also noted that price differences between stores are legal and common in competitive markets. “Some products are cheaper at certain outlets, while others may be more expensive elsewhere. Many stores also run different promotions and offers,” he said.

What to do if you notice a suspicious price increase

Consumers who observe a sudden, seemingly unjustified rise in prices are encouraged to document the details and report the issue to the authorities.

Ahli advised shoppers to keep receipts and take photos when they suspect a price increase may violate consumer protection rules.

“If you notice any violation, even if you’re only suspicious of an unjustified price change, make sure you report it,” he said.
“Take a photo, keep the receipt, and submit a complaint. Our teams work 24/7 and are always available to assist.”

Shoppers are also encouraged to first raise the issue with the store manager if the shelf price differs from the amount charged at checkout. Authorities stress that retailers must ensure displayed prices match the final price paid by consumers.

“If a consumer notices any manipulation, they can first escalate it to the store manager. If compliance isn’t ensured or cooperation is lacking, the issue can be reported to consumer protection authorities, and we will take immediate action,” Ahli said.

Thousands of inspections across UAE markets

Government inspection teams have intensified monitoring at retail outlets nationwide.

Since the start of the regional crisis, authorities have carried out approximately 7,105 inspection visits across the country, uncovering 567 violations, most involving unjustified price increases.

Regulators issued 449 warnings to traders, suppliers, and retailers, and imposed financial penalties totaling Dh207,250.

Inspection teams from the Ministry are collaborating with economic development departments across the emirates to monitor market conditions and prevent unfair pricing practices.

Authorities say monitoring is especially focused on essential goods whose prices are regulated under national policy.

Nine key commodities fall under this framework, including cooking oil, eggs, dairy products, rice, sugar, poultry, legumes, bread, and wheat. Retailers are required to obtain approval before raising prices on these items.

Temporary price increases possible

Officials acknowledge that some food items have experienced short-term price fluctuations in recent days.

Vegetables such as onions and tomatoes saw brief price rises due to supply pressures linked to the regional crisis. Authorities say these increases are temporary, and additional shipments have already been arranged to stabilize supply.

Markets across the country continue to stock sufficient quantities of essential goods, and consumers are advised not to worry about shortages.

The UAE maintains strategic reserves that can meet demand for essential commodities for up to six months. These reserves are distributed across regions to strengthen supply chains and ensure a rapid response during emergencies.

Supply routes and shipping operations continue to function normally, helping maintain a steady availability of products across retail outlets.

Consumers play a role in market monitoring

Authorities emphasize that shoppers are an important part of the monitoring system. Consumers who notice suspicious price increases can file complaints through multiple channels, including the Ministry’s website, WhatsApp hotline, or email.

Consumers can submit reports through the Ministry’s e-services portal at www.moet.gov.ae,
