New Kuwait decree bans unauthorised religious facilities and political activities at worship sites.
Kuwait has introduced new regulations for places of worship aimed at preventing their use for political activities or purposes unrelated to religious functions, Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohammad Al Wasmi announced on Sunday.
According to KUNA, the decree requires managers of all places of worship to ensure their facilities meet legal requirements within a period of no more than six months from the date the new rules come into effect.
Permits required for new places of worship
The new regulations prohibit the construction or establishment of any place of worship without securing the necessary approvals and permits, Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohammad Al Wasmi said.
The regulations also prohibit the use of places of worship for political activities or for promoting what the law describes as “radical, fanatical or violent ideologies.”
Committee formed to oversee implementation
The minister said a specialised committee, made up of representatives from several government bodies, has been established to supervise the implementation of the new regulations and ensure compliance.
The committee will oversee compliance and ensure that places of worship adhere to the standards and requirements outlined in the new legislation.
Focus on moderation and religious harmony
Al Wasmi said the regulations are designed to protect the sanctity of places of worship while promoting values of tolerance, moderation and religious harmony.
The minister added that the law aims to prevent the misuse of religious facilities and support responsible religious practices in line with the country’s legal framework.
