Friedrich Merz reaffirmed solidarity with the United Arab Emirates amid growing threats to energy and maritime security.

BERLIN: Germany has reaffirmed its solidarity with the United Arab Emirates and condemned the terrorist drone attacks launched from Iraq targeting the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Abu Dhabi.
The message was delivered by Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, during a meeting on Wednesday with Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The two sides reviewed strategic ties between their countries and explored ways to enhance cooperation across several sectors, including the economy, trade, and investment.
During the meeting, Sheikh Abdullah conveyed the greetings of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to the German Chancellor, along with his wishes for continued progress and prosperity for Germany and its people.
For his part, Friedrich Merz conveyed his greetings to Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and expressed his wishes for continued prosperity and development for the United Arab Emirates and its people.
During the meeting, which was attended by Dr Günter Sautter, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan highlighted the UAE’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Germany across various sectors in support of shared interests and sustainable economic growth.
The talks also covered the latest regional developments and the repercussions of what were described as Iranian terrorist attacks targeting civilian sites and facilities in the UAE using missiles and drones.
The two sides further discussed the unprovoked drone attacks launched from Iraq, including one that targeted the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant last Sunday and struck an electricity generator outside the facility’s inner perimeter.
Friedrich Merz reiterated Germany’s solidarity with the UAE and condemned the attacks, while Sheikh Abdullah expressed appreciation for Germany’s support and affirmed the safety and security of all residents and visitors in the UAE.
The meeting also addressed the serious repercussions of these attacks on international maritime navigation, energy supplies, and the global economy, while underscoring the importance of strengthening international cooperation to safeguard maritime corridors and ensure the free flow of global trade.
The discussions were attended by Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, Saeed Mubarak Al Hajeri, and Ahmed Wahib Al Attar.
