From AI Retina Scans to Organs on a Chip: 5 Health Tech Innovations Transforming UAE Healthcare

Imagine a retina scan that can reveal heart disease or a miniature chip that replicates a human organ. These aren’t sci-fi concepts—they are real medical innovations powered by artificial intelligence, unveiled at Dubai’s World Health Expo (WHX) to shape the future of healthcare.

By integrating AI and advanced machinery, medical organizations are introducing groundbreaking solutions that could redefine healthcare in the UAE.

The three-day exhibition—formerly known as Arab Health—is taking place at the Dubai Exhibition Centre (DEC) in Expo City, bringing together 4,300 exhibitors from over 180 countries.

Here are five must-see innovations on display at WHX:

1. Organ on a Chip

Chinese company Xellar is showcasing a system that condenses human organs into microchips. Using human tissue components and AI, the technology achieves accuracy rates of 95% and above. The complexity of the organ determines the chip size—simpler organs like the heart use smaller chips, while more complex organs like the liver use larger ones. These chips can recreate diseases, enabling personalized drug testing and speeding up clinical trials. This is the first time such technology is being showcased in the UAE.

2. Wellness Pod

The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has unveiled a compact wellness pod designed for relaxation. Equipped with dim lights and calming music, the pod offers three modes—calm, grounding, and boosting—for two-minute guided relaxation sessions. DHA is currently trialing the system, with plans to expand its use across government offices and shopping malls if successful.

3. AI Retina Scan

Emirates Health Services (EHS) has introduced an AI-powered retina scanner capable of detecting not only eye conditions like glaucoma and cataracts but also early signs of cardiovascular and liver diseases. Users look into the device for about 30 seconds, after which a detailed report is sent to their phone for future reference—potentially predicting illnesses years before symptoms appear.

4. Remote Robotic Intervention

A robotic arm, remotely controlled by doctors at a hospital, is saving lives in UAE’s remote areas. Installed in Al Jeer, Ras Al Khaimah, the system provides timely medical intervention for patients who would otherwise face delayed treatment.

5. AI-Powered Hiring Assistant
EHS is using an AI hiring assistant named Maitha to streamline nurse recruitment. The system screens CVs, conducts interviews, and shortlists top candidates, significantly reducing the time and effort needed for hiring.
