Dubai: Former Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has announced his immediate retirement from professional football as he begins a new chapter as head coach of UAE Second Division side Arabian Falcons FC, marking his first move into management.

Shelvey recently joined the Dubai-based club following his departure from Premier League side Burnley, having made eight appearances this season.

The experienced midfielder now makes a smooth transition into coaching, stepping directly into the dugout as head coach.

With extensive Premier League experience, leadership qualities, and strong tactical awareness, he is expected to play an important role in shaping the club’s next phase of development.

Shelvey made more than 250 Premier League appearances during a career in which he represented several English top-flight clubs, including Liverpool, Swansea City, Newcastle United, and Burnley.

Known for his exceptional passing range and ability to dictate play from midfield, Shelvey earned a reputation for his long, accurate diagonal passes and his control of tempo in deep-lying roles.

He began his Premier League career at Liverpool, playing alongside the likes of Steven Gerrard and Luis Suárez, before establishing himself as a key player at Swansea City and later Newcastle United, where he also served as captain.

Shelvey earned six caps for England, making his international debut in 2012.

He now moves into management, where he will coach former Premier League midfielder Ravel Morrison as part of an ambitious project under new ownership. The project is led by ex-Crystal Palace midfielder Jason Puncheon, who serves as co-owner and Head of Football Operations, overseeing the club’s long-term vision.

Speaking about his new role, Shelvey said: “I’m excited to take on this challenge and lead the Falcons forward.”

“We have a talented group and a clear vision to achieve promotion and build something special in Dubai. My ambition is to reach the very top of management, and this is the perfect project to prove myself and what I’m capable of.”

The club, currently third in the UAE Second Division standings, remains firmly in the promotion race as it targets a place in the UAE First Division this season.

Looking further ahead, Arabian Falcons have set an ambitious goal of competing in the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.

While qualification for the expanded 32-team tournament is primarily reserved for top clubs from the UAE Pro League through domestic success or strong performances in AFC competitions, the club’s ownership believes that securing promotion and establishing long-term stability will be crucial steps toward future continental qualification pathways.
