Pharaohs Advance to Round of 16 After Penalty Shootout Win Over Australia.

DALLAS: Egypt made history by reaching the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time, defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a hard-fought 1-1 draw following extra time on Friday. The Pharaohs held their nerve from the spot to secure one of the greatest victories in the nation’s football history.

Egypt created fresh history in Dallas by securing their first-ever knockout victory at the FIFA World Cup finals.

The Pharaohs made a bright start and took the lead in the 13th minute when Emam Ashour rose highest to head home Karim Hafez’s inviting cross. The goal, the 250th of the tournament, gave Egypt an early advantage.

Australia gradually grew into the contest but found it difficult to break down Egypt’s well-organised defence before the halftime break.

The Socceroos drew level 10 minutes into the second half, with fortune smiling on them.

Midfielder Aiden O’Neill whipped a dangerous free-kick into the penalty area, where Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany inadvertently headed the ball into his own net to make it 1-1. It was Hany’s second own goal of the tournament.

Both sides pushed for a winner in regulation time and throughout extra time, creating several promising opportunities, but neither could find the decisive breakthrough, sending the contest to a penalty shootout.

Egypt finish stronger

Australia goalkeeper Patrick Beach produced several crucial saves to keep the Socceroos in the contest, but Egypt finished the stronger side, creating the better chances through Mahmoud Saber, Ramy Rabia and Haissem Hassan as fatigue took its toll during the additional 30 minutes.

With neither team able to find a winner, the tie was settled by a penalty shootout.

Egypt were flawless from the spot, with Mahmoud Saber, Ramy Rabia, Mohamed Salah and Hossam Abdelmaguid all converting before Abdelmaguid calmly slotted home the decisive penalty.

Australia, meanwhile, missed twice as captain Harry Souttar and teenage defender Lucas Herrington failed to convert, allowing Egypt to secure a 4-2 shootout victory and book a historic place in the Round of 16.

The victory marked Egypt’s first-ever win in a FIFA World Cup knockout match, sending the seven-time African champions into the Round of 16, where they will face Argentina after the South Americans defeated Cape Verde later on Friday.

Australia bowed out of the tournament despite another resilient display from Tony Popovic’s youthful side, which had emerged from a challenging group but failed to make the most of its chances in the knockout stage.

Egypt, meanwhile, celebrated a landmark achievement as Mohamed Salah and his teammates kept their dream of a deep run in the expanded 48-team World Cup alive.
