Dubai’s new speed limits: Fines and penalties drivers should know.

Dubai motorists will need to pay closer attention to speed limits on five major roads from Sunday, November 1, when revised limits take effect and traffic cameras are adjusted accordingly.
While speed limits will increase on three roads, they will be reduced on two others. The changes also raise questions about how Dubai’s radar grace limits work and when motorists could face speeding fines.
How does Dubai’s radar grace limit work?
Dubai Police distinguishes between the speed limit displayed on road signs and the threshold used by speed cameras.
The posted limit indicates the maximum speed motorists are expected to follow, while the radar control speed determines when a camera records a speeding violation.
On many major roads in Dubai, the radar threshold is typically 20km/h above the posted speed limit. For instance, on a road with an 80km/h limit, a speed camera may be triggered at 101km/h.
Motorists should remember that this buffer does not give them permission to exceed the posted speed limit. Drivers must always adhere to the speed shown on road signs.
Which five roads will have revised speed limits?
The following changes will come into effect from November 1:
- Al Asayel Street: Increased from 60km/h to 80km/h.
- Al Mustaqbal Street: Increased from 60km/h to 70km/h.
- Latifa bint Hamdan Street: Increased from 60km/h to 70km/h.
- Al Rebat Street: Reduced from 100km/h to 90km/h.
- Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah Street: Reduced from 80km/h to 70km/h.
The revised limits will apply to specified sections of these roads in both directions.
The RTA has confirmed that road signs will be updated and traffic cameras reprogrammed to reflect the new limits.
How much are speeding fines in Dubai?
Under UAE traffic regulations, motorists caught speeding can face the following penalties:
- Exceeding the applicable limit by up to 20km/h: Dh300 fine.
- By up to 30km/h: Dh600 fine.
- By up to 40km/h: Dh700 fine.
- By up to 50km/h: Dh1,000 fine.
- By up to 60km/h: Dh1,500 fine, six black points and 15-day vehicle impoundment.
- By more than 60km/h: Dh2,000 fine, 12 black points and 30-day vehicle impoundment.
- By more than 80km/h: Dh3,000 fine, 23 black points and 60-day vehicle impoundment.
Motorists should pay particular attention to the revised limits on Al Rebat Street and Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah Street, where permitted speeds will decrease.
