School changes ahead: New age rules, calendar revisions and fee freeze explained for parents.
Dubai: Schools across the UAE are set to reopen on August 31, with a range of new education policies taking effect for the 2026–27 academic year.
The upcoming changes cover revised student admission age requirements, a unified three-year academic calendar, updates to Dubai private school inspections, and a freeze on tuition fee increases.
Here’s what parents need to know:
1. New school admission age cut-off
Starting from the 2026–27 academic year, Dubai private schools and early childhood centres will follow the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) updated age requirements for children entering the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) system for the first time.
The revised rules will apply only to new admissions. Children who are already enrolled in Dubai schools, as well as students transferring between schools within the emirate, will not be affected by the changes.
For schools that begin the academic year in September, children must meet the required age by December 31:
- Three years old: Pre-KG/FS1
- Four years old: KG1/FS2
- Five years old: KG2/Year 1
- Six years old: Grade 1/Year 2
For schools with an April start, children must meet the required age criteria by March 31.
A one-time transition exception will apply during the 2026–27 academic year. Children born between September 1 and December 31, 2022, who are not currently enrolled in any educational setting, may be admitted to either FS1 or FS2. The placement decision will be based on the child’s developmental readiness, as assessed by the school.
2. UAE introduces a fixed three-year school calendar
The Ministry of Education has introduced a unified academic calendar covering the 2026–27, 2027–28 and 2028–29 school years. The move aims to provide families with greater clarity and allow parents to plan holidays, travel and other commitments well in advance.
For most schools, the first scheduled breaks after the summer holidays will be:
- Mid-term break: October 12 to 18, 2026
- Winter break: December 14, 2026 to January 3, 2027
However, some exceptions will apply. Private schools in Sharjah will continue to follow the emirate’s own academic calendar, while schools offering alternative curricula, including Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi systems, may continue with different academic schedules and holiday periods.
3. Dubai private schools move to a new inspection model
Parents may also see changes in the way Dubai’s private schools are evaluated. For the 2026–27 academic year, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) will introduce a two-tier inspection framework.
Schools will be assigned to one of two inspection categories:
Schools will undergo one of two types of evaluations:
- A comprehensive inspection: Schools will receive a full performance rating based on an in-depth review.
- A shorter monitoring visit: Inspectors will focus on specific priority areas identified through school performance data.
Inspectors will provide schools with no more than 24 hours’ notice before visits. The approach is designed to assess regular teaching and learning practices rather than allow schools to prepare specifically for inspection days.
Schools that have reached their third year of operation will automatically be subject to a full inspection.
4. No private school fee increase for 2026–27
Private school tuition fees in Dubai will remain unchanged for the 2026–27 academic year following a leadership directive announced by the KHDA.
The decision is intended to support families by helping manage education expenses while ensuring stability across Dubai’s private education sector.
For parents, this means that approved tuition fees will remain at their existing levels for the upcoming academic year, with no increase in school charges.
