Residents Urged to Turn Off Surveillance Cameras When Not in Use and Avoid Clicking Suspicious Links.

Dubai: Dubai Municipality has advised residents to improve the security of their surveillance cameras, cautioning that even a minor weakness in security settings could compromise personal privacy in today’s digitally connected world.

In a post shared on social media, the municipality emphasised that safeguarding privacy begins with properly securing surveillance devices. It highlighted how adopting a few straightforward precautions can enhance camera protection and help safeguard users and people nearby.

The municipality also released an awareness video outlining practical measures residents can follow to prevent unauthorised access and minimise potential cybersecurity threats.

“Your camera could be watching more than you think,” the video cautioned.

Highlighting the risks associated with connected devices, the video explained that even one vulnerable security setting could expose users to potential threats and encouraged residents to take greater control of their surveillance systems.

One of the key recommendations was to immediately replace factory-set passwords with strong, unique and complex passwords to reduce the risk of unauthorised access.

Residents were also encouraged to regularly install software and security updates and turn off surveillance cameras whenever they are not required.

Additionally, Dubai Municipality warned users against opening suspicious or unverified links and stressed the importance of keeping account usernames, passwords and other login credentials confidential.

The advisory highlights the importance of personal responsibility, cybersecurity awareness and routine safety practices in maintaining secure surveillance systems.

Concluding its awareness message, the municipality reminded residents that protecting their digital privacy also contributes to the safety and security of those around them.
