Are dashcams allowed in the UAE? A guide to disputing traffic penalties.

Date:

Legal framework, privacy considerations, and the role of dashcam footage in disputing traffic penalties.

If you have a dashcam and are wondering whether its footage can be used to dispute a traffic fine in the UAE, the answer is yes—it is legal. Authorities have previously clarified that installing dashcams is permitted, though motorists must comply with privacy regulations.

Sharjah Police have also noted that dashcams can assist in challenging traffic violations. However, sharing footage or images that infringe on an individual’s right to privacy may lead to penalties under UAE cybercrime laws, the penal code, and copyright regulations.

While dashcams—whether factory-installed or purchased separately—can help determine fault in accidents and support traffic investigations, misuse of recorded content can result in legal consequences.

Dashcam footage can be used in traffic dispute cases, with authorities able to review and validate recordings as evidence in accident investigations. However, not all footage is automatically accepted; it must be clear and accurately depict the incident.

While dashcams are legal in the UAE, recording individuals without their consent may constitute a violation of privacy. Article 378 of the UAE Penal Code provides for detention and fines for anyone found guilty of infringing a person’s privacy through unauthorized recording.

Recorded videos can be used as evidence by police and insurance companies, helping authorities resolve traffic disputes more efficiently. Dashcams may also capture traffic violations, which can be reported and investigated by the police.

Motorists in the UAE are encouraged to appeal traffic fines if they believe they were issued in error and have supporting evidence. According to Dubai Police (2021), drivers may contest fines, after which prosecutors may summon them and review radar or surveillance footage to verify the violation.

In Abu Dhabi, appeals can be filed via the Abu Dhabi Police e-complaints portal (cas.adpolice.gov.ae), where cases are reviewed and may be escalated for further clarification. Incorrect fines can be cancelled upon verification.

In Dubai, motorists can submit objections at the General Directorate of Traffic in Al Barsha or at a police station, or file complaints online via the Dubai Public Prosecution website (www.dxbpp.gov.ae) under the “Object a Traffic Violation” section.

In other emirates, including Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, and Fujairah, disputes can be raised through the Ministry of Interior (MOI) app.
