‘Quit My Job as a Scientific Researcher’: Dubai Academy Pays Aspiring Content Creators During Training

Paid Training Allows Aspiring Content Creator to Step Away From Freelance Work and Focus on Building Her Career.

For Renata Reschetizka, a scientific researcher specialising in geothermal energy, following her passion for filmmaking required a major career decision. Shortly after applying to the Beautiful Destinations Academy, she resigned from her job to dedicate three months to professional training in Dubai.

Backed by Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism, the Academy provides financial support to aspiring creators throughout their training programme, allowing them to concentrate on developing their skills.

Four content creators shared how the experience gave them opportunities to refine their filmmaking techniques, learn from industry mentors and explore new directions for their careers.

Dedicated time to develop filmmaking skills

Before enrolling at the Academy, Renata had already spent two years honing her filmmaking abilities.

During her training in Dubai, she gained a deeper understanding of how camera angles, shot composition, framing and editing techniques can influence the way audiences experience a story.

She also developed greater confidence in handling the unpredictable nature of film production, learning to adapt when plans changed during shoots.

Renata now plans to establish her own creative business, producing films for brands and tourism boards interested in sharing compelling stories about destinations, local communities and the people who make them unique.

For travel content creator Mira de Winter, receiving payment during the training programme provided an opportunity to temporarily step away from the freelance assignments she depended on to cover her living expenses.

She explained that the need to continually accept paid projects had previously left her with limited time to develop her filmmaking skills.

“Being paid during the Academy meant I could stop taking on work just to get by,” she said.

The financial support allowed Mira to spend three months concentrating on learning new techniques, experimenting with creative ideas and determining the direction she wanted her filmmaking career to take.

She said the programme also transformed her approach to producing videos. Rather than immediately reaching for her camera, she now begins by considering the story she wants to communicate and the emotions she hopes to evoke in viewers.

Looking ahead, Mira intends to continue expanding her creative business, collaborating with tourism destinations, hotels and brands on storytelling projects.

Creators pursue different career paths after Dubai training

For the four participants, the Academy experience provided valuable skills and professional insights, although their plans following the programme differ.

Jimmie Lin Stollmeier joined the Academy while working in a creative role at a ski resort in Utah.

He intends to return to his position equipped with new knowledge of video editing, pacing, music selection and colour grading.

Jimmie said receiving financial support throughout the training period gave him the freedom to experiment with different filmmaking approaches and improve the quality of his work.

Julian Stollmeier, who entered the programme with experience in automotive filmmaking, also discovered new ways to approach his projects.

During the training, he changed his editing process, choosing to begin with music and then arrange visual sequences to match its rhythm.

Julian now hopes to expand his business beyond his existing clients in German-speaking Europe and secure more international assignments, including collaborations with tourism boards.

Discovering a different side of Dubai through storytelling

Beyond developing their technical abilities, the four creators said their three-month stay in Dubai influenced the subjects they chose to capture on camera.

Renata developed a stronger interest in documenting the people and communities behind Dubai’s widely recognised landmarks and cityscapes.

Jimmie, meanwhile, discovered a quieter, more personal side of the city through his interactions with residents.

For Mira, exploring Dubai’s neighbourhoods and observing everyday life revealed storytelling opportunities she had not initially anticipated.

The experience ultimately gave her a deeper connection to the city than she had expected when she arrived.

“I came here thinking I was going to create stories about Dubai,” Mira said. “I’m leaving feeling like I’ve actually become part of one.”
