‘Divine Providence’: Two Missiles Hit Just 500 Metres From Departing Flight in Yemen, All Passengers Safe

Date:

Two Missiles Struck Inside Aden Airport’s Perimeter in Yemen on Friday, Authorities Confirmed, as Houthis Claimed Responsibility for the Attack.

Yemen’s Minister of Information, Moammar Al Eryani, said “divine providence” had averted “a horrific humanitarian catastrophe” after two missiles struck Aden International Airport on Friday in an attack attributed to the Houthis.

The incident occurred as Yemenia Airlines flight IY 612 was preparing to depart from Aden International Airport for Cairo International Airport.

According to Al Eryani, the two missiles landed approximately 500 metres from the aircraft and just 100 metres from the centre of the airport’s runway.

The minister condemned the incident, warning that the attack had endangered civilian passengers and airline personnel.

“What occurred was not merely an assault on a civilian airport, but a direct threat to the lives of passengers and flight crews, to aviation safety, and a grave violation of international laws and norms,” Al Eryani said.

No casualties reported after missiles strike airport

The Aden Capital Security Department confirmed that two rockets fired by the Houthi movement had struck the airport compound, marking the second such incident in less than a week.

In an official statement, the department said “that two rockets launched by the Houthi movement landed inside the Aden International Airport complex, in the second incident of its kind in less than a week”.

“According to preliminary information, no loss of life was recorded as a result of the incident.”

Authorities confirmed that both missiles had landed within the perimeter of Aden International Airport on Friday, while the Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Houthi movement has been engaged in conflict with Yemen’s internationally recognised government and its Saudi allies.

In a statement attributed to a military source, the Houthis said their operation had targeted “the Saudi forces’ command headquarters in the Badr camp in Aden province”, along with a weapons storage facility.
