Aaron Rai Heads to Yas Links in November as a Major Champion to Defend His Abu Dhabi Title.
Dubai: English golfer Aaron Rai will return to the UAE as a Major champion as he prepares to defend his Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship title. The tournament, scheduled to take place at Yas Links from November 5 to 8, will mark the beginning of the DP World Tour Play-Offs.
Rai claimed his second Rolex Series title at the same venue last November, overcoming Tommy Fleetwood in a closely contested play-off. Since that memorable victory, the Englishman has continued to enjoy an impressive run of performances.
The 31-year-old reached another major milestone in May when he secured his maiden Major championship at Aronimink Golf Club, winning the PGA Championship with an outstanding display of skill and composure.
A remarkable performance over the final nine holes helped Rai make history as the first English golfer in 107 years to lift the prestigious Wanamaker Trophy.
His consistent performances across golf’s four Major Championships also earned him the inaugural Rory McIlroy Award, presented to the DP World Tour member who collects the highest number of Race to Dubai points in those events.
Alongside his PGA Championship triumph, Rai finished 48th at the Masters, tied for 11th at the US Open and shared 79th place at The Open.
Aaron Rai Excited to Defend Abu Dhabi Title
Rai expressed his enthusiasm about returning to Yas Links, describing last year’s victory as a particularly memorable achievement in his career.
He said the Abu Dhabi tournament holds special significance because of its rich history and a course that he thoroughly enjoys playing.
Currently occupying fifth position in the Race to Dubai Rankings Delivered by DP World, Rai is looking forward to competing in Abu Dhabi once again.
The English golfer also highlighted his enjoyment of practising and playing in the emirate, adding that his performances throughout the season have put him in a strong position heading into the final stages of the Race to Dubai.
With his first Major championship now added to his achievements, Rai will arrive at Yas Links hoping to successfully defend his title and maintain his momentum as the DP World Tour Play-Offs begin.
Rory McIlroy Joins Star-Studded Field for Abu Dhabi Championship
Golf superstar Rory McIlroy is also expected to compete in the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship, the penultimate event of the DP World Tour season.
Organised jointly by the DP World Tour and Abu Dhabi Sports Council, the prestigious tournament will take place at Yas Links from November 5 to 8.
The championship will feature the top 70 available players from the Race to Dubai Rankings, bringing together some of the leading names in international golf.
Competition will be particularly intense, with only the top 50 players in the rankings advancing to the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai the following week.
