iPhone Duo costs Dh8,499 in the UAE — but what’s the true cost of ownership?

Date:

Planning to buy the iPhone Duo? Here are the extra costs to consider.

Apple’s first foldable iPhone has finally arrived with a price tag: Dh8,499.

That gets you the 256GB iPhone Duo, featuring a 7.6-inch foldable display, a 5.4-inch outer screen and Apple’s A20 Pro chip. Pre-orders open at 4pm UAE time on October 16, before the device officially goes on sale on October 23.

But Dh8,499 may only be the starting point. The price on the box and the total amount you eventually spend on the phone could look very different.

Owning the Duo comes with several additional costs that can be easy to overlook. Buyers may want to protect such an expensive device, while others will need to consider whether the standard 256GB of storage will be enough in the long run.

And with the Duo marking Apple’s first entry into the foldable smartphone market, some buyers may be more inclined to spend extra on protection for added peace of mind.

1. The case: Dh319 to Dh529

Apple offers two official case options for the iPhone Duo.

The standard iPhone Duo Case costs Dh319. Its two-piece design protects both halves of the foldable device against everyday scratches and accidental drops.

The iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand is priced at Dh529 and allows the unfolded device to be propped up for reading, watching videos or making FaceTime calls. Both official cases use a magnetic attachment and are compatible with wireless charging.

That means the actual starting cost could look like this:

  • iPhone Duo 256GB: Dh8,499
  • With the standard case: Dh8,818
  • With the Folio with Kickstand: Dh9,028

2. AppleCare+: Probably another Dh1,349

AppleCare+ could be one of the biggest additional expenses for Duo buyers.

Apple charges around Dh1,349 for two years of AppleCare+ coverage for the device. The plan covers accidental damage, including drops and spills, while also providing priority support and a battery replacement at no additional cost if its capacity falls below 80 per cent.

At around 16 per cent of the Duo’s starting price, that is a significant extra expense. But the calculation may be different for a foldable device. With two displays, a hinge and a 7.6-inch folding screen, there are more components that could potentially be damaged compared with a conventional iPhone, giving buyers another reason to consider additional protection.

For standard iPhones in the UAE, AppleCare+ service fees are Dh99 for screen or back-glass damage and Dh349 for other accidental damage. The Duo also has a separate fee for replacing its cover layer.

Apple has yet to publish out-of-warranty repair prices for the Duo’s folding display or hinge, meaning the cost of repairing a conventional iPhone may not provide an accurate indication of what Duo owners could face.

3. The charger: Easy to forget, easy to get wrong

Apple includes a USB-C cable with the iPhone Duo, but there is no power adapter or EarPods in the box.

If you already have a compatible USB-C power adapter, there may be nothing extra to buy. Otherwise, choosing the right charger will depend largely on how quickly you want to power up the device.

Apple says fast wired charging requires a USB-C cable capable of supporting 60W along with a USB Power Delivery adapter. That makes Apple’s 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max, priced at Dh169, the most suitable option for buyers looking for faster charging.

The 20W USB-C adapter, which costs more than Dh70, can still charge the Duo but at slower speeds. It also does not meet Apple’s minimum power requirement for MagSafe charging.

Another option is Apple’s 35W Dual USB-C Power Adapter, priced at Dh249. While it offers the convenience of charging two devices at the same time, it does not support the Duo’s fastest wired charging speeds.

For most buyers who need a new adapter, the Dh169 option is likely to offer the best balance for getting the Duo’s faster charging capabilities.

4. MagSafe: Another Dh199

The iPhone Duo’s cases are compatible with MagSafe, while Apple’s 2-metre MagSafe Charger is priced at Dh199.

It is certainly more of a convenience than an essential purchase. But for a premium device like the Duo, that added convenience may be part of the appeal for many buyers.

Apple says MagSafe charging requires at least a 35W power adapter. The Dh169 40W adapter comfortably meets that requirement, bringing the combined cost of the adapter and MagSafe Charger to Dh368.

5. More storage: Up to Dh5,100 extra

This is where the Duo’s advertised starting price can rise considerably.

Opt for the top-end 2TB model and the price jumps to Dh13,599 — a full Dh5,100 more than the 256GB version — before adding a case, charger or additional protection.

For many buyers, the key question will be how much storage they actually need. The Duo’s large folding display and camera capabilities could encourage users to keep more photos, videos and other files directly on the device, potentially making the higher-capacity versions more appealing.

Cloud storage is another option, although that introduces an ongoing subscription cost. Plans can be shared with up to five family members through Family Sharing and, since September, also include Apple TV and Apple Arcade at no additional charge.

Compared with the price of the Duo itself, the monthly expense may appear relatively small. But unlike a case or charger, it is a recurring cost rather than a one-time purchase.

So, what does the iPhone Duo really cost?

The sensible setup

  • iPhone Duo 256GB: Dh8,499
  • Standard Apple case: Dh319
  • AppleCare+: Dh1,349
  • Total: Dh10,167 — already Dh1,668 above the advertised starting price

The well-equipped setup

  • iPhone Duo 256GB: Dh8,499
  • Folio with Kickstand: Dh529
  • AppleCare+: Dh1,349
  • 40W Dynamic Power Adapter: Dh169
  • MagSafe Charger: Dh199
  • Total: Dh10,745

The no-compromise setup

Choose the 2TB iPhone Duo with the same accessories and the total rises to Dh15,845. That is Dh7,346 more than the phone’s starting price — and that is before factoring in an iCloud+ subscription, mobile plan or any other extras.

Of course, none of these additional purchases is essential. Buyers can reuse an existing compatible charger, skip AppleCare+, choose a more affordable third-party case and stick with the base 256GB model.

The real question: What is it replacing?

With a 7.6-inch inner display designed for multitasking, reading and entertainment, the iPhone Duo sits somewhere between a conventional smartphone and a compact tablet.

That changes the value equation. Rather than simply asking, “Can I justify spending Dh8,499 on a phone?”, buyers may want to consider a different question: “If I owned the Duo, would I still need a second device?”

For someone who might otherwise carry both a phone and a small tablet, the Duo could potentially serve both purposes. And that may be the most important factor when deciding whether its premium price is worth paying.

If the iPhone Duo can replace both an iPhone and an iPad mini, its premium price begins to make more sense. But if you already have a perfectly capable tablet at home, justifying the additional expense becomes considerably harder.

The Dh8,499 starting price is ultimately just the entry point. Once storage upgrades, protection and accessories are added, the amount you actually spend can easily cross Dh10,000 and, at the top end, approach Dh16,000.

For Apple’s first-generation foldable, then, the biggest question is not simply whether the company has finally made a folding iPhone. It is whether the Duo can replace enough of the devices you already use to justify what you will ultimately pay for it.
