An iPhone chip and 8GB of memory versus an M5 and 16GB: what the difference means for work.
Dubai: Apple now offers two very different ways into the MacBook range. The MacBook Neo, launched in March, is the company’s most affordable Mac ever. The MacBook Air, updated with the M5 chip at the same time, remains a popular choice for office workers.
The price gap between the two in the UAE is at least Dh2,000. So, if you’re buying a laptop for work, which one justifies the extra cost? Here’s how they compare on specifications, pricing and what reviewers found after using them.
UAE prices
Both laptops now cost more than they did at launch. Apple raised prices across its Mac range in June, citing rising memory and storage costs linked to the AI data centre boom.
When Gulf News checked Apple’s UAE website on June 26, the MacBook Neo started at Dh2,999 for the 256GB model, up from Dh2,599 in March. The 512GB version with Touch ID was priced at Dh3,499, compared with Dh2,999 at launch.
The 13-inch MacBook Air with the M5 chip increased from Dh4,599 to Dh5,499, while the 15-inch model rose from Dh5,499 to Dh6,299.
Retailers can offer lower prices. At the time of writing, Noon was listing the 256GB MacBook Neo at Dh2,699 and the 13-inch MacBook Air at Dh5,299.

The key difference is the chip
The Neo runs on the A18 Pro, from the same processor family Apple first introduced with the iPhone 16 Pro in 2024. It is the first consumer Mac built around a smartphone chip, and that decision explains much of what defines the Neo: its lower price, 8GB of memory, strong battery life and silent, fanless design.
The Air uses Apple’s M5, a chip designed for Macs, with nearly twice as many CPU and GPU cores and double the memory.
Specs side by side
The Neo supports one external display at up to 4K resolution and 60Hz. It also lacks a backlit keyboard, while the entry-level model has a lock key in place of the Touch ID sensor.
What reviewers found
Early reviews of the Neo were largely positive, particularly when it came to value for money.
Tom’s Guide’s global editor-in-chief described the Neo as the most disruptive laptop since the original MacBook Air. In testing, it handled everyday workloads including Chrome with at least a couple of dozen tabs open, several Slack conversations and photo editing in Pixelmator Pro, sometimes with Spotify running in the background. There was occasionally a half-second delay when switching between apps, but the reviewer did not consider it a nuisance.
Longer-term testing highlighted where the 8GB of memory can become a limitation. After a month of use, reviewer Mark Ellis said he encountered a macOS “out of memory” warning once while screen sharing with almost every other app he uses open simultaneously.
Apple has also deliberately kept the two models separate. As 9to5Mac noted, there is no overlap in their configurations, meaning buyers cannot spec up a Neo to cost more than an Air.
That does not prevent an upgraded Neo from getting close to Air pricing. One reviewer argued that anyone considering a higher-priced Neo should first compare it with a refurbished previous-generation Air, which was selling for slightly less in the US.
Which is better for work?
It depends on what your working day actually involves.
The Neo makes sense if your work is light. Emails, documents, spreadsheets, web-based tools, messaging apps and video calls are well within its capabilities, according to reviewers. It is also a practical option as a second laptop, for travel, or for someone buying their first Mac on a tight budget. If you choose the Neo, the Dh3,174 model offers the more useful upgrade: for an extra Dh500, it doubles the storage and adds Touch ID, both of which can be valuable on a work machine.
The Air makes sense if you multitask heavily or plan to keep it for years. Its 16GB of memory provides considerably more headroom for running multiple apps at once, which is where reviewers found the Neo could start to struggle. The 12MP Center Stage camera is a meaningful upgrade for anyone who spends much of the day on video calls. The backlit keyboard is useful for early-morning or late-night work, while the Thunderbolt ports and MagSafe charging make it easier to connect to monitors and docks at a desk.
Neither is ideal for heavy creative work. For regular video editing, 3D work or large design files, reviewers point to the MacBook Pro instead.
The bottom line on price
For a laptop that will be used every working day, the price difference is best viewed as a cost spread over its useful life. The Neo saves at least Dh2,000 upfront, while the Air’s extra memory provides more headroom and may help it remain comfortable to use for longer as software demands increase.
