GTA 6’s 26-Minute PS5 Demo Puts Jason and Lucia’s Romance Ahead of the Heists.
Grand Theft Auto has long portrayed outlaws as aspirational figures, but Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, a 26-minute gameplay showcase captured on PlayStation 5 and released by Rockstar Games and Netflix on August 27, suggests that the game’s real fantasy may be something far more complicated: a messy, unpredictable relationship. The chaos and crime almost feel secondary.
Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos rob diners, evade helicopters and take on dangerous jobs together, but they also hold hands at parties and get ready for nights out side by side. Their dynamic often feels less like that of two criminals and more like a couple whose shared interests simply happen to include committing felonies.
The response was immediate. Netflix’s servers reportedly struggled under the surge of traffic when the showcase went live, adding another layer of chaos to a launch already generating enormous attention.
The story so far: A simple pickup goes wrong
The footage begins with a relatively routine criminal job. Jason and Lucia are carrying out an errand for Vice City fixer Ike, who sends them to track down a man named Raymond inside a run-down apartment building.
But Rockstar quickly uses the sequence to hint at some of the game’s deeper systems. During the mission, Jason pauses to pet a stray dog, triggering a small angel icon on screen — seemingly suggesting that the game may be tracking certain moral or behavioural choices in the background.
Inside, the pair discovers a seedy operation in chaos. Raymond’s crew tells them their boss has disappeared, leaving everything on hold until he returns. Before Jason and Lucia can leave empty-handed, a phone call warns them that a task force is on the way — and the response is far more aggressive than expected.
The officers open fire almost immediately, offering the first extended glimpse of GTA VI’s combat. Gunfights appear more physical and close-quarters, with Jason and Lucia battling their way through cramped hallways using pistols and shotguns before escaping through an elevator.
Lucia’s casual question about whether Jason recognised one of the shooters hints that this may not be the couple’s first encounter with the same task force. And that is only the opening sequence.
Date night?
Following the intensity of the raid, the footage shifts dramatically toward domestic life. Jason and Lucia prepare for an evening together at their shared home while the television plays in-universe advertisements — including one for an anxiety medication called Angstipan and another promoting an enormous deli-style sandwich.
The humour is unmistakably satirical, but the scenes also provide a glimpse into the couple’s everyday lives. They have a home, routines and a relationship that exists beyond their criminal activities. Unfortunately for them, crime continues to follow them everywhere.
At the party that follows, they meet Brian Heder, a semi-retired criminal who allows Jason to stay at one of his properties in exchange for helping him with jobs. Their conversation makes the situation clear: Jason and Lucia are in over their heads and need Brian to connect them with someone capable of getting them out of trouble.
Rockstar then cuts to a montage of the pair in action, including a diner robbery — an updated version of footage that leaked in 2022 — as well as a store robbery and several car thefts.
In short, the duo appears to be auditioning for a very violent buddy comedy.
The audition
Brian’s connection leads Jason and Lucia to Raul Bautista, a veteran bank robber who effectively puts the pair through an unofficial job interview. Jason takes the rifle while Lucia gets behind the wheel, and before long, they find themselves caught in a police chase far more intense and expansive than the earlier apartment shootout.
The sequence unfolds across the sun-soaked streets of Vice City, with police cars and helicopters pursuing them as Jason fires through the passenger-side window. After surviving the chase and collecting their payment, the pair begin to wonder whether they have just been recruited for something much bigger.
The promotion nobody wants
Their suspicions prove correct as the stakes rise quickly. The next time Jason and Lucia appear on a job, their casual robbery outfits have been replaced by formal attire as they take on a private security assignment for wealthy young man Andrés de León.
The job takes them from his private jet to the grand opening of MegaMundo’s first US headquarters. Inside, Andrés and his associates are partying and using drugs in a conference room, while the company’s COO, Petra, attempts to lure Jason into the celebration downstairs.
As expected, the event soon descends into violence. Armed attackers wearing medical masks and white jumpsuits — resembling the group from the earlier apartment raid — storm the venue and separate Jason and Lucia across different floors.
Jason fights his way through the attackers while protecting Andrés. At one point, he appears to activate a slow-motion ability that allows him to land several precise headshots, echoing the character-specific abilities used by Michael, Franklin and Trevor in GTA V.
Lucia, meanwhile, is separated from her weapons and forced into close-quarters combat. After being knocked down and strangled in a stairwell, she manages to overpower her attacker and take his weapon. In one of the footage’s most brutal moments, she delivers the finishing blow with the heel of her stiletto.
By the end of the footage, the broader shape of the story becomes clear: Jason and Lucia begin as small-time criminals, but a failed job draws them into a dangerous network of increasingly powerful and ruthless figures. Each new connection raises the stakes, pushing the pair deeper into trouble.
Five things to know
Being kind to animals could actually matter.
The angel icon that appears after Jason pets the dog appears to support earlier reports suggesting that player choices could influence Jason and Lucia’s relationship in ways that go beyond the honour system seen in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Combat has received a significant overhaul.
While the GTA series has never positioned itself primarily as a shooter, the footage shows smoother and more refined aiming, along with a slow-motion mechanic that appears to draw inspiration from Rockstar’s western titles.
Hand-to-hand combat has also been upgraded.
Lucia’s stairwell fight features a dodge mechanic and a quick-time sequence that ends with her using her own shoe to stab an attacker, suggesting that close-quarters combat will play a more substantial role in GTA VI.
Not every job requires both characters.
At one point, Jason and Lucia are offered a job with one important condition: only one of them can take part. In the footage, Lucia accepts the assignment, but the way the scene is presented suggests players may eventually be able to choose which character takes on certain missions.
Vice City offers plenty to do beyond shootouts.
The footage highlights a wide range of activities outside the main criminal storyline, including bench presses, pickup basketball, scuba diving, swimming, jet skiing, kayaking, street racing and skydiving.
Is the romance real?
Beneath all the hand-holding and couple-like moments lies an intriguing possibility: Jason and Lucia’s relationship may not be guaranteed. According to reporting from IGN, based on gameplay Rockstar presented separately from the Netflix footage, the two characters begin the story wanting to be together, but whether their relationship develops depends on the player’s actions throughout the game.
Players can reportedly strengthen their bond by spending time together in the open world, going shopping, committing smaller crimes and exploring Leonida together. There appears to be no major gameplay reward for maintaining the relationship beyond potential narrative differences later in the story.
Even if their relationship deteriorates, however, Jason and Lucia will still be required to work together during certain missions. The difference is that the game will reportedly track how they feel about one another.
That makes the system more nuanced than the “GTA’s Bonnie and Clyde” comparisons might suggest. It also gives new meaning to every affectionate moment shown in the trailer — what looks like a guaranteed romance could instead be one possible outcome shaped by the player.
And fans say…
The reaction to the footage quickly divided into three broad moods: overwhelmed, thirsty and intensely focused on the music.
The traffic surge alone told part of the story. So many viewers reportedly tried to watch the Extended Look simultaneously that Netflix briefly experienced an outage. Depending on your perspective, it was either the streaming platform’s biggest gaming crossover yet or an unfortunate reminder of the pressure a GTA VI launch can put on servers.
On social media, reactions poured in. Journalists and streamers quickly began cataloguing the open-world activities shown in the footage, from mini-golf, kayaking and scuba diving to gym sessions, skydiving, zoo visits and even doomscrolling. Others simply marvelled at the game’s visual presentation.
Streamer Hasan Piker, while watching the drive-by and heist sequences, noted how much the single-player experience appeared to have incorporated elements associated with the GTA Online roleplay community, particularly NoPixel.
The soundtrack also emerged as a major talking point, with the footage featuring music from artists including Sexyy Red, Depeche Mode and Phil Collins.
Meanwhile, the revelation that Jason and Lucia’s relationship could change depending on player choices sparked another wave of discussion. It represented a very different kind of fan debate from the familiar arguments over whether footage was gameplay or pre-rendered that surrounded earlier GTA reveals.
For a series built around power, crime and wish fulfilment, one of the most intriguing developments this time may be the possibility that two criminals cannot simply force their way into a happy ending.
