Dubai-based 14-year-old Filipina shows that big sporting dreams can flourish far from home.
Dubai: At just 14 years old, Rain Isabella Astaño is discovering what it means to have a connection to two places she calls home.
Born and raised in the UAE, the Dubai-based Filipina has spent years honing her skills on local pickleball courts. She is now set to represent the Philippines on the international stage in the Junior Division of the 2026 Pickleball World Cup, taking place in Da Nang, Vietnam, from August 30 to September 6.
The tournament is expected to attract around 5,000 athletes from 81 countries, giving the young player an opportunity to compete alongside participants from around the world.
For Astaño, the Pickleball World Cup marks the latest milestone in a journey shaped by her Filipino heritage, life in the UAE and a growing belief that age should never limit ambition.
“I’m proud to represent my Filipino roots while also representing the UAE, the place where I grew up, learned, trained and developed as an athlete,” Astaño said.
Dream shaped on UAE courts
Astaño’s journey has been shaped by the opportunities she has found within the UAE’s diverse and growing pickleball community.
Training and competing alongside players of different nationalities, ages and skill levels has exposed her to a wide range of playing styles and challenges.
She has also competed against adults and more experienced players, experiences that have helped her develop greater physical strength, confidence and mental resilience.
“The UAE has taught me to dream bigger and not be afraid to compete on the international stage,” Astaño said.
Her development has been supported by her family, coaches, teammates and the Filipino pickleball community. What started as a sport she simply enjoyed has gradually evolved into a serious pursuit, motivating her to train harder and compete at a higher level.
First international test
Astaño got her first taste of international competition earlier this year at the Asia Pickleball Junior Open 2026 in Thailand.
Astaño reached the quarter-finals in two categories at the tournament, finishing eighth in the Girls U16 Doubles and sixth in the Girls U14 Division. The experience provided her with valuable lessons that she will now carry into the Pickleball World Cup.
“My first international tournament in Thailand taught me a lot about handling pressure, adapting to unfamiliar opponents and staying focused on the court,” Astaño said.
The teenager expects the competition in Vietnam to be tougher but is embracing the challenge with confidence rather than fear.
“I know I still have a lot to learn.”
Preparing for the challenge
With the Pickleball World Cup drawing closer, Astaño has been focused on maintaining consistent training, refining her skills and tactics, improving her fitness and strengthening her mental preparation.
Her ambition extends beyond simply securing victories; she wants to make the most of the opportunity to compete on the international stage.
“I want to go there prepared, enjoy the experience, learn from every match and give my best,” Astaño said.
This mindset has shaped her approach to the sport. Both victories and defeats have been important parts of her journey, with every match providing another chance to learn, adapt and improve.
‘The UAE is my home’
Astaño’s story is also one of two communities coming together to support her sporting journey.
While the Philippines is the country she will represent on the court and the homeland of her family heritage, the UAE is where she was born, raised and developed as an athlete.
“I feel lucky to be part of both communities. The Filipino community gives me a strong sense of family, encouragement and pride in where I come from. At the same time, the UAE is my home and the place where I have grown as a player,” Astaño said.
She believes growing up in the UAE’s multicultural sporting environment has taught her to adapt, appreciate different perspectives and build friendships through competition.
“I’m proud to be a young Filipina athlete who has developed here in the UAE.”
A mother’s pride
For her mother, Pier Angeli, watching Rain progress from local training sessions to an international tournament has been a deeply meaningful experience.
The family has lived in the UAE since 2006, and she said the country has provided her daughter with an environment where she could nurture her talent while being surrounded by people who encouraged her to believe in herself.
“Here in the UAE, she has been surrounded by people from different nationalities, with varied playing styles and levels of experience. She has found coaches, fellow players, friends and a supportive community that have challenged her, encouraged her and helped her build the confidence to believe she belongs on the court,” her mother said.
According to her mother, Rain’s journey has involved sacrifices that often go unnoticed, including regular training, preparation, travel and the disappointments that naturally come with competitive sport.
“We have watched Rain continue to show up, work harder and keep believing,” she said.
For the family, this has been an important part of what makes Rain’s journey special.
“The Philippines will always be her roots, while the UAE is the home that gave her the opportunity to grow.”
Carrying more than a flag
Astaño’s selection has also received support from the Filipino community in the UAE.
Consul General Ambrosio Enciso III congratulated her on earning a place on the national team, describing her journey as an example of how young Filipinos living abroad can stay connected to their homeland while drawing strength and inspiration from the communities where they grow up.
“Rain’s journey demonstrates how young Filipinos living abroad can maintain a strong connection to the Philippines while benefiting from the support and opportunities provided by the communities where they grow up,” Enciso said.
The consul general added that when Astaño takes to the court at the Pickleball World Cup, she will carry more than just the Philippine flag. She will also represent the hopes of her family, the Filipino community in the UAE and a new generation of aspiring young athletes.
‘You don’t have to wait’
For Astaño, the most meaningful part of her journey is not just reaching the international stage, but what lies ahead and the young athletes she hopes to inspire along the way.
“You don’t have to wait until you’re older to start pursuing something you love,” Astaño said.
She hopes to encourage other young athletes in the UAE to take up a sport, work hard, believe in themselves and make the most of opportunities when they arise.
“If my journey can inspire even one young person to pick up a paddle, take up a sport or find the courage to compete, I would be very happy.”
The Pickleball World Cup may be Astaño’s biggest stage yet, but she is approaching it with the same mindset that has guided her journey so far — continuing to learn, improve and believe in herself.
“I want to keep improving, proudly represent my Filipino roots and show what young athletes growing up in the UAE can achieve.”
