Drivers could face a Dh500 penalty and safety risks for leaving cars running without supervision.
Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Police has urged motorists not to leave their vehicles running unattended while shopping, refuelling, using ATMs or stopping for prayers, warning that the habit could increase the risk of vehicle theft, fires and other safety incidents.
The Directorate of Traffic and Security Patrols advised drivers to turn off their engines and take their keys with them whenever they leave their vehicles, even for brief periods.
Authorities also warned motorists against leaving children, especially infants, inside running vehicles, describing the practice as a serious threat to their safety.
Police said some motorists still leave their vehicles unattended while the engine is running, increasing the risk of theft by opportunistic criminals and exposing vehicles to possible mechanical issues or fire hazards.
Abu Dhabi Police also reminded drivers of their responsibilities under UAE traffic regulations, which prohibit leaving vehicles running without supervision.
Under the Federal Traffic Law, violations involving failure to follow traffic signs and instructions can result in a Dh500 fine.
