She defeated 20 national champions with a coffee creation inspired by Emirati hospitality.

Dubai: A single cup of coffee has placed the UAE at the forefront of the global barista scene. UAE representative Lablibell Bajarias was crowned champion at the 2026 International Finals of the Lavazza Barista Challenge in Turin, Italy, after competing against 20 national winners from around the world.
Bajarias also secured the Community Prize, which was awarded through votes from the global Lavazza network. South Africa’s Daniel Smith finished in second place, while Japan’s Hiroto Suzuki claimed third position.
Winning cup
Bajarias secured the championship title with her signature creation “Il Bosco” (The Forest), a coffee concept that blends sustainability with innovative flavours.
The drink features a unique combination of ingredients, including zero-waste date coffee saccharum, lacto-fermented strawberry, cascara infusion and butter-infused coffee, highlighting her creative approach to modern coffee-making.
But beyond the ingredients and technique, it was the story behind the cup that made the creation stand out.
“One of the things that has inspired me most is the UAE’s culture of hospitality. Here, you’re often welcomed with a cup of coffee as a gesture of warmth, generosity and respect. That simple tradition has shaped the story I want to share through my work,” Bajarias said.
She said she hopes every cup she serves carries the same feeling of warmth, connection and belonging that defines Emirati hospitality.
“Through coffee, I hope to continue sharing the spirit of UAE hospitality and show that coffee is a universal language. It brings people together, creates meaningful connections and reminds us that, despite our differences, we can always find common ground over a shared cup,” she said.
Building a home in the UAE
Originally from the Philippines, Bajarias moved to the UAE in 2013 with hopes of creating a better future. Like many expatriates, she arrived seeking new opportunities but eventually discovered a completely new career path in the world of coffee.

What started as a job quickly turned into a passion when I discovered the world of coffee. Over the years, the UAE gave me opportunities to compete, connect with the coffee community and develop my skills at an international level. That journey eventually led me to represent the UAE in global competitions,” Bajarias said.
She added that representing the UAE has been one of the proudest achievements of her life, describing the experience as a milestone in her professional journey.
“Although I was not born here, this country has given me opportunities and a platform to grow both professionally and personally,” Bajarias said.
She said the UAE’s multicultural environment was a key factor in shaping her success.
“Standing on that stage, I felt I was representing not only myself but also the entire coffee community in the UAE. Winning the international title was my way of giving back to the country and the community that has played such an important role in my journey,” Bajarias said.
The work behind the victory
The achievement was the result of months of preparation and dedication. Bajarias spent countless hours perfecting her recipe, rehearsing her presentation and fine-tuning every detail of her performance while continuing to work full time.

“It was very challenging to work nine to five and then go straight to practice. I had to sacrifice sleep,” Bajarias said.
Moreover, the competition itself presented a new set of challenges, testing her skills, preparation and ability to perform under pressure.
“Every competitor was exceptionally talented, and I had to find a way to make my presentation stand out on an international stage,” Bajarias said.
She added that the biggest lesson from the competition was not simply about winning, but about the experience, growth and connections gained throughout the journey.
“I learned that success is not about perfection, but about continuous improvement. Every setback became an opportunity to learn, grow and become better,” Bajarias said.
No limits
Now a world champion, Bajarias hopes her journey will inspire others pursuing their dreams in the UAE.
“Never underestimate what is possible when you combine hard work, passion and perseverance. The UAE is a place where opportunities are available to those who are willing to learn, grow and push beyond their comfort zones,” she said.
Bajarias believes that success is not defined by a person’s background or where they come from, but by their determination, dedication and willingness to pursue their goals.
“Your background does not determine your potential. What truly matters is your dedication to your goals and your determination to keep moving ahead, even when the journey becomes challenging.”
