The refinery is expected to reach half of its production capacity within days following the restart.

Dubai: Emirates Global Aluminium has resumed alumina production at its Al Taweelah refinery in Abu Dhabi, more than three months after operations were suspended following Iranian attacks on Khalifa Economic Zone Abu Dhabi.
Production is expected to rise to 50% of the refinery’s capacity within days, while EGA anticipates having the technical capability to restore the plant to full production by the end of 2026.
The pace of any further production increase will depend on supply chain conditions and the company’s strategy for sourcing alumina.
EGA said the ongoing ramp-up of aluminium production at the adjacent Al Taweelah smelter is not dependent on the refinery reaching full capacity.
Refinery met 46% of EGA’s alumina needs
Al Taweelah alumina refinery produced 2.4 million tonnes of alumina in 2025, supplying 46% of EGA’s total requirements. Alumina is the primary raw material used in aluminium smelting.
“First alumina production from Al Taweelah alumina refinery marks another major milestone in our ongoing efforts to restore EGA’s Al Taweelah site to its position as one of the world’s leading aluminium production complexes,” said Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, CEO of Emirates Global Aluminium. “The commitment and agility of the Al Taweelah alumina refinery team enabled us to achieve this milestone safely and swiftly.”
Production suspended in March
Operations at the refinery were suspended on March 28 following Iranian attacks on Khalifa Economic Zone Abu Dhabi.
The plant resumed production of hydrate, the material used to produce alumina, on June 24 before restarting alumina output.
Located next to EGA’s Al Taweelah smelter, the refinery supplies alumina that is stored before being transported to the smelter through a conveyor belt system.
Al Taweelah alumina refinery began operations in 2019.
