Neymar Jr announces international retirement after Brazil’s World Cup exit: “I tried, now it’s over”

Date:

Neymar’s international retirement and Ronaldo’s final World Cup appearance mark a turning point in world football.

Neymar Jr. has brought his international career to a close following Brazil’s shock exit from the FIFA World Cup after a dramatic 2–1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 16.

The 34-year-old forward came off the bench at MetLife Stadium and scored a stoppage-time penalty, but it proved only a consolation as Brazil’s campaign ended in heartbreak. Visibly emotional at full time, Neymar was consoled by teammates after breaking down on the pitch.

“I tried, I tried. Now it’s over. It began here and it ends here,” he told Globo, signalling the end of his 16-year international career.

“I tried. It started here at MetLife Stadium, and I finished here. It is now over,” Neymar said.

Brazil’s all-time leading scorer departs the international stage with 80 goals in 129 appearances, having long served as the focal point of the Brazil national football team. His final goal came at the same stadium where he made his international debut in 2010, adding a sense of symmetry to his farewell.

Now back at Santos, Neymar is expected to continue his club career on a year-by-year basis, with injuries having increasingly shaped the later stages of his journey.

A legacy that defined a generation

Neymar’s departure marks the close of one of Brazil’s most influential modern eras. From shouldering expectations as a teenage prodigy to becoming the nation’s all-time top scorer, he leaves as both a record-holder and a defining figure of a transitional generation.

The defeat also prolongs Brazil’s long-standing struggles against European opposition at the World Cup, with growing frustration over their inability to reclaim global dominance.

Norway’s win, driven by an Erling Haaland brace, sent shockwaves through the tournament, while Brazil were left reflecting on yet another early exit from title contention.

Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be his final appearance on the global stage.

Speaking ahead of Portugal’s knockout clash, the 41-year-old captain said he intends to savour every remaining moment of his international career with the Portugal national football team.

“I want to enjoy what will be my last World Cup to the fullest,” Ronaldo said. “Hopefully tomorrow won’t be my last match.”

The veteran forward, still chasing another deep tournament run, is preparing for what could be the final defining chapter of his career on football’s biggest stage.

A changing of eras in world football

With Neymar stepping away from international football and Ronaldo nearing his final World Cup cycle, the sport appears to be entering a symbolic transition period.

Two of modern football’s most recognisable figures—both defined by longevity, records, and global influence—are now approaching the end of their international journeys, as a new generation prepares to take centre stage.
