Dh300,000 Debt to Multi-Million Success: The Story of a UAE Entrepreneur

A bold, risky choice with little initial planning eventually grew into a successful business and a career supporting others in the industry.

At just 19 and with no prior experience, Katie Godfrey found herself facing around Dh300,000 in debt after launching her first beauty salon. What began as a high-risk move with little planning eventually became the foundation for a successful business and a career dedicated to helping others thrive in the same industry.

Although opening her first salon without formal qualifications or experience was a significant gamble, Katie says that taking that step was essential to her success. Today, the former salon owner has transitioned into entrepreneurship, mentoring and supporting other salon owners as part of her career.

When Katie first launched her salon business, she eagerly invested in the latest industry trends—though she later admitted she should have been more cautious and waited to see which trends would last. Her continuous investments gradually led to mounting debt, which eventually totaled £65,000 (Dh319,000).

“Not paying off the debt wasn’t an option,” Katie said. “I set myself a five-year goal to clear it all, and I did exactly that.” Beyond financial investment, she devoted significant time to building her business and learning every aspect of the industry, a commitment that ultimately paid off.

Katie credits her turning point as an entrepreneur to shifting focus from working in the business to working on the business. “Once I started gaining clients and building a team, I saw the income stabilize. The real breakthrough came when I stepped out of daily operations and focused on growing the business itself,” she explained.

“That change was a complete gamechanger. Redefining my role within the business was one of the best decisions I made, leading to substantial growth across my salons, training academies, and product lines.”

Lessons Learned

Katie reflected on several mistakes that, in hindsight, were crucial to her success. The biggest was opening a salon with no clients and no prior knowledge of running a business—all while in debt.

“Even so, I had no choice but to keep going and learn how to build a business, because going under wasn’t an option for me,” she said.

Another important lesson came from learning to lead her team effectively. “I had no boundaries and just wanted to be liked, but that didn’t work as we expanded,” Katie admitted. “Through my mistakes, I learned how to become a strong leader, which allowed me to manage over 45 team members across multiple branches—and now helps me guide my clients in managing their own teams.”

“After 16 years of running salon chains, my latest and biggest risk was diving fully into the business coaching space,” Katie added. “I no longer had a passion for running my own salons and wanted to focus on helping others grow theirs.”

Today, Katie is a multifaceted beauty entrepreneur—author, podcast host, and judge for major beauty awards. She has received numerous accolades, including Beauty and Aesthetics Business Strategist of the Year at the Corporate Vision Global Business Awards, and has built award-winning salons, training academies across the UK, and a professional product line sold internationally.
